Sorry - I forgot to say. I don't have the butterfly valve as
       it's non servo.
I've just been speaking to a diesel guru and he thinks it's
either the pump timing too far advanced or the governor is
sticking. Before I touch the lift pump I'll bang it back on the
mark and see how it is before I start thinking about taking the
       pump to the shop.

I repositioned the pump dead on the mark last night, and went
for a quick smooch around the block. It seems to be pulling a
lot better now, so hopefully everything will be ok.

Well the beastie passed the MOT yesterday, with one minor
advisory (TRE dust cover got a small hole)
There is still a lack of power however despite the pump tweak,
yes its better than it was but still not right. So as I was near
and have a voucher, I decided to pop into Halfrauds and get a
compression tester. I couldn't find one so asked the spotty oik
behind the counter. He brought me a petrol one despite me asking
for a diesel kit. Helooked baffled when I told him it wasn't
right so I left. Has anyone got one I can borrow? I'd just like
to cross low compression off the list or at least confirm it. As
I sit here now it is becoming more and more likely that could be
       the issue.

Thing is youth,a Diesel engine wants fuel , air and sufficient
compression ratio. Not enough air ,it smokes ,not enough
compression it's a bastard to start insufficient fuel supply it
won't go very well when you start to labour ie. on gradients.
Timing can be rectified, then what ever remains is the problem!
I like Diesel engines , they make sense!
They give good clues to problems.
Hope to hear some good news . :lightblb: :smilewide:

Due to the pressure involved diesel compression testers are many
monies, I would just ask a garage to do the test rather than
       shelling out for one.
I'm glad that re-setting the timing has helped and that you are
road legal, which also allows for road testing! :). Now to start
working through the rest of the system as folk have discussed so
far. Find a hill, get the peddle down and look for smoke (noting
       the colour). :-?
I still believe renewing the lift pump should make a difference
and you certainly won't lose anything by it :smilewide:

Ste - I have a Sykes Pickavant diesel compression tester that
you're welcome to borrow, if you come round and collect it.
Alternatively, I can bring it over at the weekend if you'll
assist me in changing the brake shoes and drums on the front of
       my own motor...

Dave - I'd gladly help you except we are moving this Saturday!
       To Manchester...
I'm going to take a look at the lift pump next, then when we're
settled and sorted I will pop over and borrow the tester Dave if
       that is ok?
The motor used to start very easily but since I started mucking
about with replacement pumps it's been more difficult. Some of
that has been down to air leaks (now fixed) and bleeding issues
plus a worn battery (also sorted now) but it still takes a lot
       of cranking to fire.

Well I found one issue - that brand spanking new air hose was
delaminating on the inside at both ends. Fixed that and it goes
like a train - on the flat/downhill. Still quite slow on hills
though, improved but still not right. It's almost as if the
engine doesn't have enough grunt for the gear selected and it
just dies away. However I'm not talking tackling steep inclines
in fourth here, I went out last night and (for those who know
the area) the climb from 'Go Outdoors' to the first set of
traffic lights at the top of the hill (between Thornhill and
Middleton) I couldn't get past 15mph in second. At the top of
the revs I then changed up to third and immediately lost all
momentum and had to change down again. I know 2.25 diesels are
slow, but they're not that slow. Something else is up. Like I
said, on the flat it goes like a train and I'm now running out
of ideas what I can check, any more pointers?

Just keep plugging away working through the system, correcting
bits as you find them. When lots of stuff is wrong its like
working your way out of a spiral. First you go around fixing the
broken things, then around again setting everything to nominal
and around at least once more getting the optimum settings. This
can be a dangerous process. If you accidently begin working the
wrong way you will spin in ever tighter circles until you
eventually disappear up your own arse. AKA 'For sale, Unfinished
       Project' :smilewide:
This is (very) approximate, but a diesel engine which will rev
freely at lighter loads but which dies out under heavy loading
is getting enough air but not making a big enough bang. Main
suspects there are insufficient fuelling or poor timing. When
you put your foot hard down to signal the engine room for
maximum speed, is the governor actually responding properly?
Test and fettle everything and your reward will, eventually, be
a top notch 2.25 diesel. Really quite a spiffy thing. :smile1
I have a nasty suspicion that I'm getting even less helpful than
       when I started dogwalk

No, that is helpful Steampunk, as is everything else that has
been suggested so thank you everyone. I don't really have much
time now to sort things before I need to get the Land Rover over
to Manchester on Saturday. The idea was to use it and a trailer
to get some of our stuff over there (the bulk is going in a van
but may as well utilise the Land Rover too) and I'm worried it
won't like the distance with a bit of weight plus a trailer. I
certainly aint using the M62. To be honest the steering is a bit
iffy anyway and needs adjusting on the shims but it is
driveable. As you will recall the pump is currently dead on the
mark, but now I know the air hose wasn't up to scratch it throws
all previous results of pump tweaking out the window. I may try
to see if I can improve things a bit with a small adjustment. I
can't wait till after the move when I can get all this done
       properly!
