Actually, it is a kwality agri-leafer (a new word there) of the
highest order; and, personally, I'd value it over almost all of
the vehicles in Parksy's list - but only 'cos I'm a fan of
agricultural stuff so it ticks a lot of boxes. I guess it's not
the sort of vehicle that you can properly 'use' these days
(although it would look great on a laning video..!). But it is
proper rare.

Rare is a very much abused term and up to the individual to use.
I just enjoy my '62 Hybrid.
And some don't even think it is is that.. :smilewide:

What's rare about a "proper 109 1 ton"?
My first Landrover was that. Ex military 2A 109" described as a
"1 ton"
All I know is the springs were too dam hard for normal use
without a load in it.

A proper 1 ton is the civi factory made 1 ton; civi rear cross
member ENV axles or Salisbury.
Heavy duty chassis with extended shackles etc but with 6 pot
engine mounts.
Came standard with wide wheels and 900 tyres.
So a bit different from the military spec :thumbs:

^^^and a low ratio 'box as standard coupled (in all but a couple
of noteable exceptions) to the 2.6 six-cylinder engine; giving
an effective top speed of about 45mph but superb pulling power.

Am I right in thinking that the wheelbase is wider than a normal
series motor?

Good Morning All,
This always an emotive subject. I wish eBay would establish some
criteria and block adverts for things which simply aren't rare
but get advertised as such to catch the gullible.
As the owner of an 1950 80" Mobile Welder I know what is rare.
It is a fact there are are 18 of the original 48 80" Pre-Pro's
known to exist in some form, so they aren't actually rare.
There are probably 5 or 6 of the original 113 Mobile Welders
left and I believe mine is one of only two currently road worthy
(I think the Houbens is the only other one), it's last outing
was the Series One 65th.
Next would be my 86" Pre-Pro/ Pilot Build, built in late 1952
and one of only 4 or 5 left from the original 9 made.
It did trials with the Spanish Army and was converted in the
factory to be a Mobile Welder. It will be made roadworthy again
one day and needs extensive repair work to the bulkhead and will
come out as fully functional welder vehicle making it rare both
as an 86" prototype and then one of only 2 86" wheelbase Welder
vehicles in the world, the other being in Australia.
1948 year Land-Rovers aren't that rare and there are a fair
number of Tickfords known to exist but they are probably rarer
than 80" Pre-Pro's in real terms.
I accept this is a narrow Series One perspective.
As time moves on later vehicles become the focus of attention as
the prices for early or genuinely rare Series Ones go ballistic.
That's what drove me to get a low mileage FC 2B, they are
already becoming difficult to get parts for. I enjoy a
challenge.

Good call, I saw a couple back in 2007 as I was working in the
place where they ended up.
