       Imperial S3 gearbox

Does fitting an early S3 imperial gearbox to a later metric S3
motor present any problems? Also what about the fitting of an
O/D from a late metric box to an earlier imperial box? :-?

I had to do this in a bit of a hurry a few years ago
       :rolleye0012:
I believe the box I fitted was actually series 2, but not
       certain. What I found was:
The only real difference is the clutch operating mechanism and
thus the bell housing shape. The early type clutch operating
mechanism is not compatible with the later type clutch. Ordering
and fitting the earlier type clutch should avoid this problem.
As it was an emergency job, my solution was to take the front
end and bell housing off of the later 'box and fit it onto the
earlier box. I wouldn't recommend this approach as it requires
the labyrinth oil seal on the earlier gearbox input shaft to be
machined away. That said, I did the job in a field in the snow
and the only option was to grind away the over diameter sealing
faces. Still fitted and working, with no real leaks (a bit must
surely come out but nothing actually noticeable).
So far as I know the transfer box was the same throughout
production so the overdrive should fit fine. The casing
dimensions for both gearbox and transfer box didn't change
(still whitworth bolts right to the end). If the gearbox is
early enough to you might miss full synchromesh if you are not
       used to doing without?

You'll need 3/8 UNF nuts for the front of rear propshaft
fitting. Certainly M8 coarse bolts for the clutch cylinder. Not
certain about the parking brake linkages, but try all the
threads before fitting, and go get the right fittings first.
Ignore the advice about 2a/3 compatibility. Not relevant in this
       case. (However useful)

       Thank you boys.

I'm not sure that I was all that helpful in the end. I can
confirm that the handbrake will couple up absolutely fine though
