S3 1971 heater box removal

I'd be grateful if someone could clarify the best way to remove
the heater box - mine's absolutely knackered and falling apart.
The two bolts that hold the bracket to the bulkhead... I think
have captive nuts... Is that right? (The other two on the sides
i have removed). Yet the workshop manual says remove the trim
from inside the cab. I can't get the trim out... does it come
out as one length in which case the steering wheel trim has to
come off.

Mine is a 78 which did not have captive nuts. If it is the same
you should be able see the nuts in the passenger footwell just
below the padding underneath the parcel shelf.

This is what I have. The trim just hides a metal shelf... and I
can't see how to get the trim off. Should somehow be able to get
at the back of the bulkhead just below the vents.

Sorry Jesse. I was wrong. The top two are captive nuts. I was
thinking of the lower ones. Perhaps I was lucky that all the
bolts came out without any problems when I gave my heater a
refurb last year but I certainly did not remove the parcel
shelf. That panel is all in one piece by the way. Good Luck.

Got them both out without drilling or grinding. The inserts are
like a helicoil. If one puts a screwdriver behind and uses a
socket on the bolt head - the insert will very gradually come
out without damaging the bulkhead aperture.
I took the motor out as well; you may have noted in the pic the
arctic heater, a header tank and air filter will go in it's
place.

I took the full heater assembly out of an S3 being broken. I
remember it was a right PITA with bolts that didn't want to
undo, and having to strip the dash apart (which was coming out
anyway and went to another forum member)
I got it because my early S3 has a S2 heater on the bulkhead, so
I now have all the bits to make mine "right" If I can ever be
arsed.

dash? that's my next job. How does it come apart?
From what I can see; there is a metal tray and the fabric is
just stuck to it. I wanted to get mine off as it's a bit 'the
worst for wear' and rust proof the metal tray before it gets too
serious.
