Cook bros Preston...I remember going up there just after I bough
my Landrover brand new...I wanted a tailgate and hood
sticks...nobody wanted such things in 1975 so they just dumped
them in a pile at the bottom of the yard...£5 got the lot.
I used to drool over Austin Champs in the exchange and Mart as a
young 14 year old lad....under all the ex army sales.
       Nick.

       Cracking thread..!!
Given the choice of a Champ or a Series 1 Land Rover, I'd take
the Champ any day of the week. >rock<
       I really want one..!!!

Another Champ has just been bought by a guy in Oldham .He
brought it back from Holland, where it had been in the fire
brigade before a couple of dutch owners who couldnt get it
running right it has a slight misfire.Hes doing a ground up
restoration on it and Ive no doubt it will be another cracker.

Back in 1962 my first posting in Germany was to a unit with
16 champs. Of these only 2 had the RR engine with the lead seals
the others had made under licence Austin built unit.
We used to race them in reverse, quite interesting at 50+ mph
       in a corner.
The main reason they were discontinued by the army was cost,
roughly two and half times the cost of a Land Rover.

My Dada wasa staff car driver in Gemany and also was in Cyprus
as part of his National Service in 1956/7 . He drove champs I
will have to ask him if wrecked any rear axles :o When I have
asked him how they compare with the Series 1 he backed the champ
as being superior! But he is talking about comfort and the
driving experience I think rather tahn off road prowess.
       The pictures are great!

I've always liked Champs. The first I saw in the flesh was
parked just round the corner from my school-gate, the other
kids just didn't get it. Me, I'd drool over it on the way home,
I''d have been about nine. I was hooked then, and I reckon I'd
have one now, only my grandad had a 109 and so it goes..

Years ago when I lived in Liverpool, a friend of mine moved into
a new flat around the corner and came to tell me that the back
garden was full of 'wrecked Land Rovers'. Naturally I couldn't
get round there quick enough and found two old series and an
       Austin Champ.
The Champ had apparently been used by Julian Cope in the
Teardrop Explodes video 'Reward' in 1981.

I had a friend at school who had a Champ, his dad had a farm and
we used to play around their fields and yard in it (late 70's).
       - I later used it, and another wreck of a one they had, as
reference material for one of the pieces I submitted for my HND
       in Technical Illustration (1984).

it still exists on the 'Champ Register' I believe.
