Zenith 36 IV carb - oil bath air filter
   DIR By: jessejazza

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       On my S3 I have a Zenith 36IV carb with a K&N filter (which i am
not keen on keeping). I would rather put an oil bath filter on
which I have got or a paper one of some kind.
Looking at my battery tray where the oil bath filter should be
sited assuming that it went in the same place as an S2A - there
doesn't seem to be space. The solenoid looks as if it is meant
to be sited there... S2A were at the front of the battery tray.
There's no sign of grounded off brackets so it seems mine's
original but ? where was the factory fitted air filter.

If anyone has an oil bath filter fitted to their S3 could they
       post some pics.

       Hi
No pictures at the moment but will take tomorrow Thought the oil
bath filter was on extensions from battery tray to above the
solenoid Solenoid being just visable in the gap between oil bath
and battery tray Maybe its not an original battery tray

That thought occurred to me after comparing what is on the S2A
LWB I have. The solenoid is at a different angle i.e. turned 90
degs. I have seen what I believe to be a Discovery 200 dti
airbox which would make an alternative.

I do not believe your battery tray to be original, as my late
series 3 just had a flat plate with this assembly bolted to it.
The oil bath filter bracket sits toward the rear of the engine
       bay.

The oil bath filter is a maintenance issue I felt I could do
without, so I fitted a paper element filter from a V8. There
would be plenty of room to fit one of the cans from a 200 tdi
defender, which would also look in keeping. The plastic 300tdi
airboxes are cheaper and would fit. I just didn't want anything
that new under my bonnet ::)

       Hope that helps.

many thanks folks - it would seem the battery box isn't original
but seems to have been well done. I need to hunt for a diesel
       airbox!

Who would you recommend for used spares? I often find ebay more
expensive and bits sometimes don't arrive... do I'm not that
       keen on using it!

I got a 300tdi airbox - cheaper and more readily available than
the 200 tdi. Cut off the rad nozzle and it fits fairly neatly
where the heater matrix used to be (I'm fitting an arctic heater
so that space is available but it wouldn't go anywhere else.
As for connecting up to the Zenith is this nozzle for these
carbs or were they for the Solex. If for the Zenith does someone
have a pic of the setup. I assume it had a small length of
rubber hose between carb and nozzle but the parts manual didn't
show it? alternatively I could use a 58mm 90 deg bend and a
       reducer for the airbox nozzle.
