diff clunk

when taking up drive i am getting a loud clunk/squeak
I am yet to pull it apart to investigate & i know it could be
the drive flanges giving out or the diff. as i say this is this
weekends work planned.
If it is my diff, i do have a spare one & all the shafts &
flanges that go with it but it is 10 spline & not 24
Currently i have the later 24 spline setup Would it cause me a
world of pain if i simply swapped the shafts & diff for some
older 10 spline ones on my rear axle only? assuming that the
ratios are the same?

Might also be a prop UJ, particularly if there's a squeal
involved.

Have posted on other forum, I would have thought it unlikely to
be a UJ that's gone as the vibration is immediately noticeable,
however it is another bit of the system that can add up to
noticeable backlash

Vibration, squeeking and a clunk on take up = Propshaft UJ. I'd
bet on it.
Sometimes they can be hard to spot with the prop still on the
vehicle, but take it off and look at it on the bench and you'll
sometimes find they are so completely shot that you're amazed
you couldn't see it when it was still on the vehicle.

As far as the diff is concerned, all Rover 4.7:1 diffs are 10
spline; your 24 splines are only at the drive flange ends, so
yes you can use 10 spline halfshafts and flanges if you need to.

ooh i didnt know that the diffs were all 10 spline, Happy days

Not all 10 spline diffs are 4.7 : 1. Early 90s with rear drum
brakes have 10 spline axle. Also early discovery's do. Their
ratio is 3.5: 1.
I'm not 100% on this, but I haven't been proven wrong trying to
pick up 3.5:1 diffs:-
An easy way to tell is on a 10 spline 4.7:1 diff you have 6
bolts on the diff cone plus your big nut in the middle
(propshaft end).
A 10 spline 3.5:1 diff does not have these 6 bolts just the
big nut in the middle.
Always check though by turning the diff on the propshaft and
seeing how many propshaft revolution to one revolution of the
half shaft/planet gear/wheel.
There are other rover car diffs that will fit into a landrover
with slightly different ratio. But i'd don't know how they
differ in ratio. ...
