       My series 2 Rowland
By: Cfnteabag Date: April 6, 2014, 7:44 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
After punishing myself for selling my old serie 3 jack with a
boingy, I decided to right the wrongs and found a series 2 that
had failed to sell on eBay really close to me, after convincing
the wife, I was disappointed to note that it had been relisted
and then sold instantly while I was writing the guy a message to
go and view it, luckily for me the person who bought it never
got in contact so I went to have a look and bought it
       immediately!
After waiting for my daughter to be born! I went and picked it
       up!
       So what I have is a 1960 series 2 88 fitted with a Perkins 4.203
and range rover diffs, the engine pumps oil out of the rear main
seal and the bulkhead could do with a bit of work!

So my plan is to take it to work and strip the front end down to
repair the bulkhead and find and fit a 200tdi, hopefully sending
a disgay to the scrap heap in the sky at the same time!
To do this I needed to be inventive as I needed the land rover
and my daily drive puma to both be at work at the same time!
       Enter this!

Is that a galvanised chassis? (or just painted silver)

The rear cross member has had some welding and been sprayed with
       zinc paint.
I knew there was a reason you don't tow the daily driver with
the project! Anyone driving down the a303 near Andover give me a
       wave!
Bodged Cooling system has decided it has had enough and has
failed spectacularly! Waiting for as now! Hopefully the man
points I loose for needing to be recovered are regained for
partially refilling the cooling system with urine when the hose
       popped off the first time!

Well I eventually made it back after the aa came and got me,
       fell into bed at 0400!
So I thought I'd have a busy morning to make up for it and I
have made a very exciting discovery! We don't need to worry
about welding anything, simple cutting an old road sign to shape
and filleting into place is quite good enough!

Also works for footwell panels as well if you add some bolts!

But this morning I have got to the point of pulling the engine
out, just needed to stop for chicken and tea!

Well the end of day two and another busy day and another load of
       bodges found!
I have managed to strip back and remove the bulkhead which
unhelpfully left it's bottom corners attached to the chassis!
I have discovered that the fuel return line has been fitted to
the fuel tank by punching a hole in the top and just feeding a
       bit of pipe in!
On the plus side I managed to acquire a v8 engine so just need
to sort the bits to attach it to the gearbox etc!
Plan for tomorrow is to have a look at the v8 and see what
condition it's in and start to clean in the chassis ready to
       paint it

So suitably refreshed I headed back to the workshop and set
about the engine, soon it was removed and on the floor so I
stripped off the conversion kit ready to put that and the engine
on eBay! That was the end of the first day in the workshop.
Tuesday started nice and early and I was back in the workshop to
crack on, after making sure I had brought suitable brew and
       lunch with me!
The next job was to remove the bulkhead as it became obvious
that it was beyond saving, as it turned out it was so far gone,
I didn't need to remove the bolts running through the outriggers
as both bottom corners had rotted away!

I also started to discover just how bad the person who had done
the work to the land rover in the past had been! As well as the
fillered road sign over the dumb irons, there was also some more
of the sign riveted and fillered over the bulkhead, there was a
final bit riveted over the rusty bulkhead outrigger as well!

The fuel return line was just fed through an unsealed hole in
the top of the tank! Overall just someone that shouldn't be
       allowed near a toolbox again!
Then as a final part to Tuesday I pulled the seat box out, with
all of 7 bolts holding it on!
As I only had Wednesday morning to work on the land rover, I
decided to remove the front axle so I could get access to
replace the dumb irons and also strip and clean up the front
       springs.

I had a look at the v8 engine but I can't decide wether to fit
that or go for my original plan of fitting a 200tdi engine.
I also started reforming the road sign!

So that brings me to today, I am sat in my room about to head
down to the workshop, I think today I will have a dig out of the
bulkhead and see just how bad it is!
