More Welding!

Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice about some
welding I need on my Series 3 chassis. I discovered the a small
hole today in what appears to be a replacement quarter chassis
very close to the spring shackle. I am sure if I started
hammering this would open up to about an inch or more in
diameter. She is due an MOT in a couple of months so will not
pass in this condition. I had planned on treating her to a new
chassis at some time in the future but I am not ready to
consider this as an option yet. As she has already had a quarter
chassis fitted at some time in the past I presume fitting a
replacement in not an option. I would like to know if patching
so close to the spring shackle is acceptable for the MOT. As you
can see patches have already been fitted in the past to the
replacement quarter chassis which seems to be solid on the other
side of the box section and all rust is limited to the side
shown in the photo's as far as I can tell.
Is a replacement chassis my only option now

I am not a real welder (there is a joke in there somewhere) but
a new spring hanger is about £12 so if it was chopped off and a
replacement piece of metal was inserted then you could fit a new
spring hanger over the top.

I can't see a problem repairing that hole, grind it back to good
metal and put a patch on. as long as the welding is good it wont
fail mot.
I've seen much worse than that successfully repaired.

As above ^^ grind back to good metal, even if it opens a big
hole, then weld a patch in it. Only half hours work ;-) then
its good for an MOT.

Chances are you'll have to make a fair sized hole before you
find metal good enough to weld to., probably all the way to that
patch on the right. Depends on whether you want to do a quick
fix to get through the mot or a stronger repair that will last
longer. Do you do much towing with your rover?
I put new sides on the chassis rails of my 109. Another option
is a new half chassis if you don't want to replace the whole
thing.

give it a good clean up and see what you've got. As stated above
you can weld new spring hangers on to a chassis so repairing
shouldn't be a problem.

Many thanks for all your responses. I will sleep better tonight!
Unfortunately I am not able to do any welding myself but I am
sure there are few local garages who would be willing to do this
for me. I expect this is something I will have to get used to
and being new to series ownership maybe I should make the effort
to learn how to weld as I am sure it will save me a packet in
the future.
On further inspection it seems that the rest of the chassis is
in pretty good condition and it is just the replacement quarter
chassis that has the rot so maybe enrolment on a welding course
might be money well spent and save the new chassis for a time
when I can afford the expense and the time.
Appreciate all your help.

Before you go down that route seriously consider investing in a
welder. Many "professional" welders have taken the piss out of
my SIP 100amp gasless MIG but I've had it 20 years and it's
never missed a beat. Several have used it and been quite
surprised. I've done plenty of chassis repairs including
replacing the rear crossmember on my 109 about 13 years ago and
it's still good, never managed to pull it off.
Gasless may not give as clean a weld as gas but if you're
working outside the gas can blow away from the work area anyway.
Yes, it's not £££ Murex but plenty good enough for the odd patch
here and there and would fix the hole you have in a heartbeat.
For the price used and new welders are you wouldn't get much
garage welding done.

I am sure you are right Noel and I know I will probably get my
outlay on the equipment back on the first job but despite being
good at most other things diy I have never used a welder so
wouldn't know where to start. I live in Ware in Hertfordshire
and have had a small garage in the town who is also an MOT
testing station recommended by a neighbour so I will pay him a
visit over the weekend. In the meantime I will check out the
local college for any courses they may be running in the future.
