Compression Test Results (8-1 2.25 Petrol)

I ran a compression test on my 2.25 petrol and got 8.5 Bar
across all four cylinders. On the basis of the 8-1 compression
ratio and taking atmospheric pressure to be approximately 1 bar
I was happy with this. Until I read in my Haynes manual that the
compression pressure, on the starter motor with the engine warm
(as it was) should be 11.2 to 11.9 bar.
Do I have a problem (or is there some likely cock up in the test
method that I may have perpetrated)? :-?

Did you do it with the throttle open or closed?

Well possibly. A closed throttle will certainly restrict
airflow.

Try again throttle open.
As they are all even you will probably find the figures come
back up

Thank you.
Engine is out now, but will test again after I put it back
(Tuesday probably) and let you know either way. I'm hoping like
hell its because of my mistake :)

Is the compression reading the only reason you took the engine
out?
If so you could have done a lot of work for nothing. Piston
rings (and pistons) can be changed with the engine in situ and
the head/sump off.
New rings and a light hone will work wonders on a tired engine.

Not really. I took it out to do a bunch of other work; I now
have an entirely leak free engine, for how long remains to be
seen.
Popped the engine back in on Tuesday and took it for a cheeky
test drive to Portsmouth and back the same evening (200 miles).
Still havn't done that compression test though. Ho Hum.
