Halogen headlamps

This may be a silly question, so I apologise in advance! But
what does a halogen headlamp conversion consist of?
Surely it cant be just bulbs can it, I imagine holders and some
kind of regulator. Also is it expensive and or worth it.
I need new bulbs as I am converting from 24 to 12 volts on my ex
military 2a, so I'm exploring the options!

Hi
From what I remember you just get new lenses, bulbs and a box.
I would fit a relay in to the circuit as halogen bulbs draw more
amps than normal "pi55 holes in the snow" sealed units.
Is it worth it? Hell yes!!! Cheap and easy to do if you know
wiring.
LED conversions are available but what a price :eek: :eek: :eek:

they consist of the bulb the lenses and and bowls and they do
make a real difference and well worth it in my opinion but as
they draw more current than sealed beams it best to put a relay
in on each light to save frying the older wiring but they are
dead easy ro install and only takes a few mins. you can get a
set for about £45 i think, the light is less yellow and more
brilliant white.

Buy good quality ones though. The Shitpart ones aren't very
good... I think the glass is to milky to let light through. I
had a better beam spread with the sealed beams (if not as
powerful) but it was an emergency, and I needed to use it in the
dark.

^^^ what he said. Buy better quality and you won't regret it.
When I fitted mine I spent half a day chasing a poor earth due
to the lights being dim. The penny finally dropped when I
checked the bulbs. I had 24v bulbs in a box marked 12v !!! I
fried a collum switch very soon after so now have relays in
circuit.

Don't fit the ring ones their as shit as the britpart ones, they
fit and work just the profile on them is absolutley wank of the
highest order.

I have wipac ones fitted and they seem pretty good, i have not
used a relay and have had no problems in five years. they are
alot lot better.

Have chrystal eye 7" reflectors, vast improved beam pattern
over the standard round ireflector, got them from simmonites,
fit whatever power bulbs you want (sorry lamps, bulbs grow in
fields, for any sparkys on here) :smilewide:

I've had several brands over the years, wipac mediocre with poor
beam cut off. 1st gen crystal good beam but the plastic lens
discoloured after a few years, cibie very good but expensive and
refector rusted (to be fair most metal reflectors will rust in
time), newer crystal type very good but got some with glass lens
this time no disclouration so far.
To sum up I'd go for either a crystal type as long as the lens
is glass or standard pattern lens type as long as the reflector
is glass.
As for relays, fit your headlights first, make sure the earths
are as good as you can get, then start you engine, turn on the
lights and measure the voltage on the battery then without
moving the meter lead connected to the chassis (you might have
either the + or - of the battery connected to the chassis,
depending on the age of your land rover) measure the voltage as
close to the bulb as possible.
The difference is the amount of voltage you are loosing in the
wiring from the battery though the switch and down to the lamp
(battery voltage 13.8v-bulb voltage 10.9v=voltage drop of 2.9v)
the bigger the loss the dimmer the lights, next get a good thick
wire and run it from the battery to the bulb, (with the engine
still running) and for gods sake tyre not to short it to the
chassis, if the lights get noticeably brighter then you should
think about fitting relays.
If this scare the shit out of you get someone else to do it,
nothing worse than fighting a viehical fire.

Good thoughts on voltage drop. I used relays for a different
reason, to take the load off the switch contacts. I got through
two collum switches in just over a year, no problems since
fitting relays. I also added an extra earth from where the
earths meet up on the slam panel back to the battery.
