Engine won't turn over

Engine is a 2.5 petrol. late '71 series 2A, headlamps in wings
type. I have recently had some earthing issues with the lights
etc and am overcoming these but in the course of doing this
tried to start the engine and all I got was a lot of clicking
from the solenoid. Tried shorting out the solenoid but no effect
whatsoever. Removed the starter motor and bench tested it and
found it was completely dead. Got it rebuilt, tested on the
bench and works fine. Refitted to vehicle and - yes - still
won't turn over engine and lots of clicking from the solenoid. I
have just got underneath it and connected a fully charged
battery to the starter direct and it very reluctanly turned
perhaps half a revolution. Tried again, the same. Took cables
off (battery jump leads) and found the positive very hot.
For a long time I have had reluctant turning over from cold, as
if it is over advanced, which to the best of my knowledge it
isn't. I tried turning on the starting handle but it is a bit of
an effort, needs two hands, not like my Austin Seven.
Could there be an engine problem? It normally runs as sweet as a
nut, with no smoke and pulls well. Or is there a simple
electrical issue I have overlooked? ???

Check it will turn over on the handle and check the battery is
fully charged.

Thanks for reply.
Yes, as I said, I tried turning on the handle, not easy, but not
sure how easy a big lump like that should be to turn over by
hand. Battery fully charged. Plus spare that I used this
morning.

have you tried the earth from the engine to the chassis /battery
maybe try connect a jump lead from the engine block to the earth
terminal (not sure if yours is positive or negative earth)

Mine is a negative earth. Yes I have tried all sorts of
combinations of earth connections. However I would have thought
that completely bypassing all that and using a separate battery
directly connected to the starter motor terminal and earthed to
the mounting bolts, as explained, would have produced a better
result.

Bench testing the starter does not load the motor remove the
spark plugs and see if it can manage to turn it over.
What was the condition of bushes and commutator like.

Jump leads are sometimes crap at doing what you want them to do.
Have you ensured that the battery to block connection is clean
and tight ? Block to chassis connection clean and tight ? Does
the choke cable get hot when you attempt to start it ? If it
does that indicates a poor earth somewhere.

Yippee :giddy: success.
I removed all the plugs as suggested by Serious and the engine
turned over easily on the handle. I connected my spare battery
to the starter directly and it turned the engine over OK.
divie, you were right. I replaced the plugs and connected a
separate cable from battery earth to the block and the engine
started. Unfortunatley I had forgotten to re-connect the exhaust
downpipe that was disconnected to get the starter out. Probably
woke the local neighbourhood up from their afternoon siesta. Who
cares? the engine goes and the problem has been solved.
I will replace the earth starter lead to chassis but would
welcome suggestions for the best place to fix battery earth lead
as the existing setup isn't much use clearly and hard to get at
somewhere down under the battery support frame.

Do a longer cable to the bulkhead bracket?

I've always tended to just add an extra earth strap from engine
to chassis on Series Land Rovers
Belt and braces and all that
