Front end shaking

Hell everyone,
New to the forum here and I've an issue. I've an SIII 88 and the
front end/steering is having 'some' shaking issues and that is
an understatement. I took it to a garage and they thought it was
thrust washers in the 4wd gearbox - causing the vehicle to stay
in 4wd when it was not supposed to. The garage removed the front
prop shaft - this should fix the problem temporarily and said -
we can't fix transmissions but made a recommendation on who
might.
When I took it to the garage originally, it was shaking
violently 6 inch back and forth in the steering. I thought it
was the big rubber bearing that is part of the steering system
(replaced). When I collected the car today, the problem is not
fixed - though a bit better. I've noticed some Range Rover folks
complaining about a similar problem and the suggested issues
could be out of balance prop shaft, lost prop shaft bolts, worn
steering ball joints or even the hubs. I do not think it is the
rear prop shaft as it is manifested in the steering and it goes
ugly when the load is taken off the system. Am I think
correctly? Any suggestions?

Have you checked the bottom of the steering relay?
It is worth checking someone hasn't replaced the pinch bolt in
the drop arm with a normal machine screw.

A few common things to look at. Is the steering box bolted on
tight, is the steering box bracket loose on the chassis? Those
are the first thing to look at if it is as bad as you say. Next
check that the U bolts on the springs are tight. It is then a
case of carefully going through the steering joints for wear,
jack it up support it well and remove the track rod end where it
attaches to the swivel the swivel should have a pull of around
12/14 pounds at the arm when the seals are in place.
I take it there is oil in the steering box,relay and swivel
housings and that you have looked at the wheel bearings to see
if they are loose.

Undo two of the four screws on top, use one to fill, the other
will act as a breather.

I think you need to find a panother
What thrust washers in the gearbox ?
Dd removing the prop fix it - i doubt it ...
What rubber coupling in the steering, there isn't one in a S2
the steering is only rods, ball joints and the realy
The most likely cause of your problems is worn out swivel
bearings, or rialko bush

My thoughts exactly. Swivel pre-load issues. Either sort it or
fit a steering damper. Or both.

Damping on the swivel housing pins. It used to be a common
problem on 80 inches with taper ollers top and bottom.
Set the preload according to the book using a spring balance.

5988 - removal of front prop shaft did not fix the problem - the
green bible is in the car - so I don't remember the exact part
but I just remember that it was an odd diagnosis. The garage did
admit they do other old cars but not LR. I live in Stuttgart,
Germany and they did recommend a British Heritage repair shop
not far from where I work. I'll be going there today, hopefully
they have experience w/ Series vehicles, their website is much
use. If not the closest real repair shop is 90 minutes away.
I think the rubber bearing (what I call it) is right below the
steering relay.
I really do think it is the swivel bearings or bushings - maybe
shocks but not so sold on that.
The feeling I get when the shaking starts is that of resonance -
starts small and increases rapidly - I can use power or brakes
to move it out of the resonance range. I haven't done the
'scientific' tests but I think it happens when I take my foot
off the gas and coast down - cant remember if I was in gear or
out but something to try. It rattles the whole car but is really
felt in the steering wheel.
After this is sorted, I've been thinking about a steering damper
- I think that is next.
