Loose starter motor

Went to start my series 3 and when I turned the key there was a
very nasty noise which after having a look turned out to be a
loose starter motor
By that I mean the top nut and stud had disappeared, and the
lower stud, still with its nut firmly attached was about halfway
out!
I have had this Landy about 3 years as a mid term replacement
whilst I am stripping down and rebuilding my original one as
time and funds permit and it has never missed a beat until now.
I have never had to touch the starter in my ownership.
Just wondering if studs unthreading due to vibrations etc is a
known thing? Perhaps the last time the starter was changed they
were not fully tightened and just worked loose over the years?

They can be a bit of a bugger to tighten up. If a previous owner
has skimped on the effort that would explain it. I have a Spare
diesel starter if needed.

I have a mate with a 2.25 diesel in his 88". When we did an
engine swap, he managed to lose the studs/bolts that hold the
starter motor on. So we bodged the starter on with two cable
ties for engine testing purposes.
Two years (and about 10,000 miles) later, I was helping him with
an oil change, and I noticed the starter motor was still held on
with cable ties....

Thanks for the offer divie, but the actual starter should still
be fine. I am fitting two new studs so hopefully all will be ok.
My main hobby is bus restoration and one of our rear engined
buses awaiting restoration has numerous cable ties holding the
accelerator linkage together at changes in direction down the
length of the chassis!

The stud threads will be worn. Unless you Loctite them in they
will come loose again.
If the thread is totally buggered you can retap next size up and
get a stepped stud made.
But you probably know this if you work on buses.
