       PoM February 2014
       By: 1960SeriesII Date: February 25, 2014, 5:48 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here's the final cut - not much to choose from again and in fact
I am wondering whether to put up a submissions topic for the
upcoming month... There is hardly anything being submitted these
days, PoM or not - many of the submissions are just snaps of
leafers without any particular photographic merit. Of course
it's that time of the year, but the number is still not typical
       of previous years.
Looking at the submissions, it is all very well to snub the
artsy attempts at photographing the average leafer, but that was
originally the point of this competition I believe. Not a 'best
snap of the month', but a competition of photos taken with some
understanding of composition, angle, light etc. If you look at
the winners section you will hardly notice any straightforward
       'jump out and snap' pics.
There is no longer much to choose from in this respect nowadays
and I believe the whole concept simply does not have a
sufficient number of members with genuine interest not only in
leafers, but also photography. The photography section is here
to last, so there's space for good photographs to be published
and shared here, but unless there is more interest in the
'artsy' bit, then there's no use for a PoM...
Opinions can be posted here I think - a heated debate might give
the topic more traffic at least :) I will think about this in
the meantime and see whether it's worth continuing as it is.

I personally look forward to photo of the month each month, as I
love seeing photos of all different kinds of Leafers. I don't
vote on Artsy I vote to see how the land rovers are being used,
location and of course if the photo is well taken.
That's just my view. I don't want to see it

January up here was just really poor weather for photography,
dull and raining for days on end, so I did not get the camera
out much if at all. Feb has not been much better but I got a
couple of reasonable pics in the floods, so one for the next
       comp.
In terms of "style" I agree with the comments on composition,
angle etc. Personally I don't go for pics that have been
"photoshopped" or otherwise re-engineered beyond a bit of
cropping, so the composite jobs with the purple clouds will not
get my vote. That said, we've seen some pretty poor "snaps"over
       the months.
Perhaps if the photo-buffs were invited to give some tips on
composition etc ? I'd certainly be pleased to learn from the
masters, because some of the pics we've seen were superb !

Personally I found that intro a bit unnecessary. Nobody is
snubbing anything artsy, infact they are lovely photos and I
       enjoy viewing them.
I have never seen anything in my time on the forum saying that
the point of the PoM was for "composed" photos only. I thought
it was for anyone to submit for fun and to showcase what we have
been up to. Obviously I have misunderstood.
And surely if you are struggling for submissions, it is a little
bit silly to snub photos that aren't perfectly composed, as this
will only drive entry numbers down.
I just don't see the need for the attitude. If you want
submissions, don't make people feel like they should not submit.
Often photos are taken without the space or time to carefully
consider exactly how to create the best possible image.
Maybe the way to ensure the survival of the competition is to
open it up to any entrant with a respectable photo of their
motor, be it on a hillside in the sun or in a garage showcasing
a particular job well done. The winner will still be the best
       picture.
Anyway, I shall cast my vote and desist.

I think that you should send in what ever snap you have of your
land rover A good photo will always win Its down to us to enter
and to choose the winner Wether its one of good composition or
one of a working vehicle Misty has only been on work runs at the
moment I dont think its worth entering a photo of her on a
       supermarket carpark

       hi,
I agree with introduction, i am not a person who has time for
snapping photos all the time. I have a lot of things to juggle.
my picture was taken with an old mobile phone (button era :|)
i thought i might participate just for the fun part.
i would be more concerned with how many votes do come in, as the
photographic heads will still be happy and enjoying their hobby
after all PoM or not. the problem is if few people give an input
to it which would make the thread 'useless'

I do enjoy the PoM, but have to agree that many are just snaps
of a land rover, which to me are of no interest. As an example

That is one way of looking at this issue, but I am not asking
people not to take pictures, I am just suggesting people should
       - for their own benefit and not for some dubious internet fame -
think before pushing the big camera button.
This is not saying I don't like looking at pictures of leafers,
quite the opposite - same as everyone on here I like pictures.
Historically though, on the old forum and the new, this
competition (and the topic title says it all) was for the best
of the 'quality' pics of leafers. Random snaps were usually
moved to the General section. I am perhaps guilty of aggravating
this misunderstanding by not doing so that often in the recent
       past.
Why not look at all that's within the frame of your picture and
think of the objects you might not like being pictured with your
leafer - it might be a road sign, a garbage bin sticking out at
the back, a part of another vehicle, whatever. If there's
anything that can be concealed by your own vehicle just by
taking a few steps to one side or to the back, why not make a
second photo if you have the time.
Angle and distance are equally important - try taking a picture
from a few steps away, just to fit your leafer inside the frame,
then a photo from a distance - you will note how different the
same vehicle looks in the photos. Or try taking a shot while
standing up, then try to take another from as low as possible.
My personal opinion is that leafers look the best when you are
taking the shot from approximately the headlight height or
       possibly lower for effect.
I am not a professional photographer and most of what I know is
self-taught - I just take hundreds of pictures and eventually a
few are good ones, so I am perhaps not the right authority to
explain what is right. It's just a gut feeling most of the
       time...

if (it's a big IF) i've taken pictures i then have to decide if
i have any i think are worth sharing, unfortunately most of the
more interesting pictures i have of my landrovers are taken by
other folks as i'm usually sat behind the steering which in turn
excludes them from submission to POM by me
for the last few months i've not had time to get out and about
which leads to no pictures taken by me at all
on saying that POM should continue as from time to time there's
opportunities for us lesser mortals to have captured a good
picture (composition, lighting etc') and even snaps just help to
show folks are still enjoing themselves and thier motors
