300 tdi into my 88 series 1

The rebuild is underway and the plan is for a 300 to go in
instead of the 2 litre petrol lump.
The plan is to bolt it upto a series 2 box and go from there.
Has anyone got any photos of such a conversion that I can study
and any guidance notes would be appreciated.

You do know the 300TDi won't just drop on to the chassis engine
mounts like a 200TDi will, don't you? The oil filter is in the
way :-?
You'll either have to fabricate a convoluted mount to go around
the oil filter or cut the chassis mounts off and weld 300TDi
ones to your chassis.
Or alternatively, make a remote oil filter mount to move it out
of the way.
Other than that, it's fairly straightforward.
Cheers,
Robin.

The plan is for new mounts. The plan was for a series box, but I
have been reading that a lt77 is possible, but how do you get
around the permanent drive to the front axle?

there's a few folks that run the lt77 longstick gearbox and
transfer box as standard through Series axles without problems
(ignore "windup" as there's a centre diff)
if i was to do a lt77 conversion I certainly wouldn't be
fretting over running a Series front axle

Could always run an 80in front axle as they are constant
velocity with tracta joints not UJs, of course parts are a bit
more scarse though but the track is right.
I get what people say about the centre diff taking some of the
loading out and it might make it feal acceptable (I havn't
driven one) but if you've ever driven in 4WD on a hard surface
all that kicking you feal will still be happening in the
axle/front prop and whilst the centre diff will help hide it a
bit its still gonna be causing more loading than the properly
engineered solution, perhaps its only really significant if
you're doing enthuseastic high speed cornering but there must be
something in the fact that every manufacturer who makes a
perminant 4WD system bothered to fit CV joints to the front
axle? CVs are the way I'd do it if I was planning on using it a
lot, if it was a lower speed ocasional toy I'd probubly be less
bothered with UJs unless it drove like shit, though a lower
speed ocasional toy S1 is a pritty fine machine when powered by
the standard 2.0 petrol, I miss the one I used to have - lovely
engine if not completely nailed.
