Clutch doesn't stay disengaged (SIII)

Hi,I have a Series 3 clutch problem and I'm not sure what I'm
doing wrong.
If I'm in gear and come to a stop, with my foot still holding
down the clutch pedal all's well for a couple of seconds then
the Landy lurches forwards like I've taken my foot from the
clutch - I then can't get it out of gear, and have to either
stall it on the brakes or pull the stop cable (diesel).
When I reverse, disengage clutch and select 1st gear it will
lurch forward and stall the motor, all with my foot still holding
the clutch pedal to the floor.
It doesn't act like this every time, maybe 50% of the time.
I thought it was a hydraulic problem at first, but if I'm in
neutral I can hold down the clutch pedal for a minute and then
select a gear it goes into gear without a problem - I figured
that if there was a hydraulic problem it would have gone into
gear with a crunch?
Last year I replaced the clutch friction plate and pressure
plate (both Britpart),and since this new problem I've replaced
the master cylinder and slave cylinder but the problem
persists.I've spent ages bleeding the clutch to be sure there's
no air in the system, and adjusted the pedal height and free play
as per the manual.
It also seems that releasing the clutch when pulling away is now
more difficult too, like it all happens in about 1/2" of pedal
movement instead of being more progressive.
Any ideas what my problem is?

flexible hose? worn on inside and so bulging up and taking up
hydraulic pressure? how long has it been there?
what sort of fluid levels are you having? are you topping up?
109 2.25 diesel too here. could be valve in the master cylinder?
when you take off did you ever try engaging reverse with pedal
down? all other gears are synchronized dont know if that affects
the symptoms reverse is not meshed in so might crunch.

I replaced the flexi hose last year, there's no loss of brake
fluid,I just replaced both master and slave with new Lucas and
Delphi-Lockheed and it's made no difference.
None of the gears crunch when engaging, even if I hold down the
pedal for a full minute, there's no crunch when engaging reverse.

For about £4 I would change the hose. I had one fail after 3
months, quick and easy way to eliminate it.

What symptoms did you get when your hose failed after 3 months?

"What symptoms did you get"
A temperamental clutch that did not always disengage cleanly. No
fluid loss, I changed both cylinders to no avail.

maybe you can ask someone to press the clutch pedal several
times rapidly and see if you notice any bulging of the outer
skin or perhaps with no pressure applied on pedal try bend the
hose and see if it shows any cracks. mine is in there for more
than 4 years i suppose and it is my daily drive.. might as well
give it a look :)
re starter when mine used to jam i just tapped it lightly with
the spare wheel rod and then it would spin on nicely.

The way the fault is described, it definitely sounds as if the
clutch is re-engaging even though the pedal is down (Duh! That's
pretty obvious).
I can't think of how anything in the clutch housing could cause
this, so it sounds like a hydraulic problem: The fluid is
leaking away from the slave, allowing the clutch back into
engagement.
When the clutch has re-engaged with the pedal held down, what
happens if you then pump the clutch vigorously and then hold it
down? If the clutch disengages, then that helps confirm the
theory that the fluid is leaking back.
As others have said, my first suspect would be the flexi hose.
If changing that (again) doesn't help, then I'd look at the
master cylinder next.
Try getting someone to pump the clutch pedal vigorously whilst
you see if you can spot a leak anywherer or a bulge forming in
the flexi.
If the fluid level in the clutch reservoir is not dropping with
time, then you haven't got a leak from the system, so perhaps
the master cylinder is allowing some fluid to pass the seals on
the plunger/piston back into the reservoir.
Is there any wear in the pivot on the pedal? What I'm getting at
is, if you push the pedal down and sideways at the same time it
might be that that puts a sideways load onto the master cylinder
and allows fluid to leak past the seals?
It's probably worth pumping/operating the clutch a few times
with the engine off and the cap off the reservoir and
watching/listening for leaks, gurgles or bubbles in the fluid.
When you fix it, let us know what it was.
Cheers
James

Well I tried to fix the problem with new master and slave, but
this made no difference. There was no leak before, still no leak
now.
I think it's a hydraulic problem too.
The pedal box is like new,no movement in any unintended
directions (I had a good look at it when I replaced the master
cylinder)
Didn't consider the rubber hose because it's not a year old yet
- but I'll replace it and see what happens.
I'll definitely report back with a solution when I find one.

I would be interested to see if the hose change resolves the
problem as my 88 is experiencing exactly the same problem
described. I haven't got round to investigating it yet as it
doesn't do it all the time. No fluid loss though and master and
slave look reasonably new. Seems to be worse on cold mornings.
Good luck.
