Used engine oil on chassis

Any views on this?
I have traditionally given my various Landy's a good blasting
with used engine oil a couple or more times a year to aid
preservation.
Is it a good thing...due to potential acids in the oil?

never actually done it but most of my landys have a certain
amount of oil over the chassis and those bits dont seem to rust
there is a garage locally who offers chassis oiling, I know
plenty of people who've had it done, although they advise not
parking on your drive for a few days after application

Can't do any harm... as was said above , the oily bits don't
tend to rust so it must do some good , and hey, it's recycling !

My personal take on it is don't do it. Firstly it's not as
effective as something designed for the job such as waxoyl and
secondly it's nasty stuff. If you drive through a ford etc some
is bound to come off and enter the water course. It might seem
inconsequential, and probably is, but my feeling is enough leaks
out of a Landy as it is without adding to that pollution.

Acid in the oil seems like nonsense - if it was as acidic as
some people have claimed then why has it not dissolved our
engines from the inside out?
But I'd still use paint instead if you can be arsed.

I think the theory is good but in practice you'll regret it as
soon as you work underneath it. Plus in the summer it will drip
more than it normally does... :smilewide:

You're not saturating it as much as you would think. If don't
properly it really doesn't drip off, just a light coating, it
will soak in and leaves less of a mess than your leaking T-case
cover, or differential seals. In the past I have done a mixture
of motor oil, Marvel Mystery oil and chainsaw bar lube.. but I
don't think there is any merit to using any "special"concoction.
What you do need is this:

This is a pretty neat site..
if you can get your hands on one of these Schutz guns, it makes
a world of difference, kind of foams it as it comes out of the
tip. This site is interesting. I don't know if you can get Fluid
Film in the UK, but if you can.. it's pretty impressive stuff.
It's lanolin based, and really does the job. I saved my classic
Range Rover with a biannual coating of oil, here in the
Northeast US we use way to much salt on our roads.
I found that Waxoyl, having worked in an a shop that specialized
in Waxoyl application,great stuff and has it's applications,
really is best for a new chassis. The hard shell tends to
encapsulate dirt (if not cleaned properly) which in turn holds
moisture in. Also in not prepped properly the Waxoyl will peel
off. It's application is just as if not more of a mess than oil.
It makes a real mess of things if you have to (will have to)
work on your truck.
If your major concern is the environment, then you certainly are
driving the worst vehicle, therefore you shouldn't be fording
anyway.
I think people envision the chassis dripping with gobs of oil,
leaving funny oil soaked patterns all over town, spraying down
the environment and wreaking havoc everywhere you go. It just
sets up as a fine film and mostly gets absorbed, if done
properly. And is cheaper than a Waxoyl kit. (which again has
it's place..) with no disrespect to Waxoyl.

Thanks guys!
The dripping isn't major. I do apply plenty of oil and *some*
drips off, but within a couple of days it leaves just its usual
evidence :)
I'll continue to do it then...I want my Shed to last forever!!

Yeah, galvanising... that really should be a standard finish to
all steel components.
If I ever fulfill my dream of building up a S2 from scratch,
it'll deffo include a galvy chassis and bulkhead! (oh, and
300tdi engine & autobox! :eek: )
