Replacement Water Pump

Finally found the source of a water leak which started a month
or two ago on my series 3. I had thought that it was coming from
the bottom hose where it joins the pump but it was coming out of
a preformed hole in the casting behind the pulley.
I am planning on buying a replacement pump but as I have read a
lot about the poor quality of some replacement parts I was
wondering if it is worth refurbing the pump as it appears to be
a Rover item.
Have any of you tried this and is it worth the trouble bearing
in mind that the quality of refurb kits is also probably
suspect.
My local independent landy garage usually supplies Allmakes 4x4
parts which in my limited experience seem to be of good quality
but I would welcome your advice.

Hi, Yeah, I've rebuilt a few water pumps, using the Bearmach
kits available.
Here's a step by step guide;

You will need a press or access to someone with a press. If its
the original water pump you've got it's well worth rebuilding,
if you've got the time, skills and tools. Otherwise, 15 quid or
so for a blue box pump is the way to go!.

Thanks Jack. I have ordered a new one. Unfortunately I don't
have access to a press at the moment but I will keep the old one
as a spare as I may get round to restoring it in the future.

^^^ a good plan I'd say. Often the older castings are much
better quality (fuel pumps being one of those, the AC castings
are far superior to any pattern I've seen) so would be worth
hanging onto for refurb later. Places like LR Direct and LR
Series offer genuine parts, you might find a genuine rebuild kit
is a similar price to a pattern replacement.

Picked up an Allmakes replacement today which looks ok. If it
stops raining long enough I hope to get it fitted over the
weekend.

Can you let me know how you get on with the all mark? I've got
to do the job as well and would prob look at a replacement and
keep the old one on the shelf for later!

Fitted pump this morning and all seems to be fine.
Learnt the hard way not to work on a landy on a windy day
without removing the bonnet. It hurt. Lots of blood too!!

Lief Spring, I learnt that way to. Only problem was the bonnet
mounted spare was still on the bonnet..........

I put a modern pattern pump on my 2.25 diesel about 3 years ago,
been fine though I remember it had metric threads instead of
unified ones for the fan pulley. I replaced the pump late last
year as I wanted to fit a sherpa flange and pulley and it made
sence to use a new pump given the cost. If anything the new
pump looked better quality than the older one (they'd even
bothered to paint it) but the old one still felt okay once
removed.
Granted 3 years isn't exactly a mega endurance test though my
truck does get a fair bit of use and we all know some crap parts
fail well within that time - Based on the two I've had I
wouldn't say pattern pumps are in the "avoid at all costs"
catagory (watch mine break next week!)
