banter and folly in the 2.25 diesel world

hm.
has anyone tried sticking manifolds and turbo off a 2.5td onto a
series block?
the engine on my present runner is a 2.25 5 main bearing diesel
which has been bored to +030 at some point. it also seems to
have a 2.5 head on.
It is a good runner touch wood, no oil consumption, starts
properly in the morning when normal heat is applied and i think
the pull is adequate for vintage.
i know tdi is the route, but as you may reason out they are rare
here, not that people here scrap discos at such a heavy rate as
in UK. :)

There's no pressured oil feed for the turbo. nor a drain.

Why would a 2286 blow to bits with a turbo? A well looked after
(or recently re-manufactured) will be good enough. It's the
ancillaries that cause the issues. Poor injection equipment,
leaking water pump, poor hose seals, out of balance rotating
electricals, poor pump timing as well.

I started this topic for the chat's sake, i love the 2.25s. I
guess they are just fine for our microscopic island. no motorway
driving and everything at a stones throw away.. plus it has the
most important safety FEATURE of all :smilewide: It is sluggish
enough to stop me from doing crazy overtakings and drive in a
safe and respectable 70km/hour :smilewide:
I was just wondering. i guess the block is proven enough since
it has been in production in 2.25 format for ages and some of
its design also got its way into the tdis, the head is a 2.25NA
in reasonable shape. i guess it would handle the slight
increase.
it was just a thought. i could buy bits like front timing belt
area and build it up as such even in timing chain format i would
simply advance the main pump. nah it is just an adorable motor
as is. plus it has

Couldn't the turbo oil feed be from the supply to and from the
oil cooler on military petrol engines?

As the owner of a 2.25TD, the answer is yes and no!
The initial install went well, except I didn't notice the waste
gate was stuck shut, resulting in 13+psi boost & one melted
piston after 3k miles. :haha: Performance was good though.
Waste gate was fixed, boost returned to a more reasonable 5-6psi
and all has been well for 35k miles. Top speed is ~85mph
(exciting & noisy) or 35+mpg when driven sensibly.
Wouldn't do the job again though, given low price for a Tdi.

2.25TD - I like this idea.
Can you give more details on your conversion DaveSIIA..?

well i went by a video on you-tube some months ago with a 2.25
with a massive turbo installed. :\
i do have an adapter for oil-cooler feed that inserts between
filter housing and block so i guess it is sort of doable?
hm price wise i guess not worth, there is presently an exhaust
manifold and complete turbo on ebay at around 200? if i did not
mess the numbers. and a complete td2.5 for just 150 sold as
spares or repairs as no testing facility - states ad... and
crate to malta 200, seems tidy enough idea to just buy the whole
engine
