Thanks for the good words
I've been stripping the engine down, and cleaning up parts as I
go.
I've bead blasted all the crud off the pistons, The big end on
the 4th one looks like it's gotten pretty hot at some point. I
can't see anything wrong with the bearing shell and the crank
seems ok, It's had a regrind along with undersize bearings,
maybe in the past its picked up the bearing?

The big end bearing shells will be good for some time yet, but
the mains are down to the copper backing, and will be replaced.
The bores had a bit of a step at the top, I spent an hour or two
twirling the ridge reamer to take the step away so I can fit new
rings, without them smashing into the step worn into the bore
and breaking.

A quick de-glaze after with a hone and were looking good.
On to the cylinder head, All the core plugs were corroded, I've
never had to change core plugs in a head, Only the cup type ones
in the block. I thought they were lead welch plugs, beaten in,
Untill I cleaned them out, They're alloy & threaded!. I found
the part numbers in the parts book (230252 for the one plug at
the back of the head & RTC4250 for the 4 under the rocker shaft,
both are BSC threads) and did a quick trawl on the net, New
plugs ordered.

Now just to wait for ordered parts to arrive!.
Cheers, Jack.

 Yeah its a good film, I haven't seen it in a few
years, might have to refresh my memory!.
The registration paperwork has arrived (finally) from NZ land
transport, And now know that it had been owned by the collage
for 38 years from new, the last owner did say he was the second
owner, having it in his hands for 8 years.
Gotten a box of engine bits from LRSeries.com, And replaced the
cylinder head core plugs this weekend.
Borrowed a thread file from work, with an internal file at the
end, 16TPI is the correct one for the BSC core plugs.

All of the threads were pretty badly corroded, and needed a lot
of working with the thread file to get the plugs to fit. I've
smeared a bit of thread sealant around the core plugs, just to
seal up the threads good and proper like.

I've then beaten the daylights out of the core plug with the
peining end of a ballpein hammer, Just like the old ones were.

And the same with the other core plugs, and the one big 'un at
the back, Just to give the last two a good hiding with the
hammer.

I've done the fiddly job of putting new valve seals in, I've to
get some blanking plugs for the heater outlets, Also need to
find 3 pushrods, a set of valve collets and a sump.... might
just pickup another engine for parts?!
Cheers, Jack.

Been working nights this week, Waking up at about 2pm & with no
real hurry to do anything, I've found myself tinkering about
with the engine. I wasn't best pleased with the finish left by
the 3 legged stone hone, So I remembered using something called
a 'flex hone' when rebuilding pneumatic cylinders at work years
ago, It looks a bit like a chimney sweeps brush, but with
globules of abrasive on the bristle tips. Bit pricey for what it
is, but it does by far a better job.

Completely stripped the block down now, Camshaft and tappets
removed.
OLLR TOP TIP; I use the starting handle down the tappet slide
bores to spin them around and pull them out, The pegs on the
starting handle just about fit down the slide and make it an
easy job to remove stubborn stuck tappet bores that haven't been
removed in years

I've quickly buzzed a dual action sander over the head and block
gasket surfaces to tidy them up.
What does '1051' sprayed on the side of the block mean?

I've chucked lots of bits like the crank and camshaft in the
parts wash, I'll leave them in there a few days for it soften
the black gunge off.
Cheers, Jack.

1051 will just be a build number (rather than engine serial
number).
Looks good

Judging by the colour, one of the con-rods is likely scrap.
Would carefully inspect the dark one, it has suffered a big end
failure at some point and may be oval in the housing.

I reckon something pretty nastys happen'd there too, Its not got
any sign of bearing problems now, just the colour, Its had a
crank regrind and the bearing shells look in good nick. I'll
pinch the big end bolts up and run a mic around, just to be
certain though.
Thanks Parksy, I'm just baffled as to why there is no paint left
on the outside of the block, but yet the spray painted numbers
are still there!
Thanks, Jack

Busy busy busy, Been getting stuck in to this engine.
Stripped the block right down and jet blasted all the grime from
the outside and inside, and with the core plugs out blasted as
much of the rusty sediment out of the water jacket as I could.

The big end shell that I ordered were wrong, The locating tabs
are on the opposite side, I must have an early Series 2 block. I
ground the block to accept the later bearing shells after seeing
on-line prices for early type shells

The last piston to be fitted was awaiting its new con-rod, A
fella up in Hamilton had a new one for the pricely sum of $15,
Not even worth risking putting back the one thats gotten hot.
