which tdi for s3
DIR By: markgriff

after posting a recent thread ( running costs ) there were a lot
of thoughts, lpg / tdi/di. which got me reading even more.
some people suggest using disco mounts to reduce noise and
vibration when using a 200 di/ tdi. if you are going to cut and
weld new mounts is it not better to use a 300 tdi, due to
availability and ease of fitment due to turbo position.
I am not looking for a racer, would a di be a good option for s3
88, if so would it be ok with 3.5 diffs or high ratio
transferbox.
any thoughts welcome. cheers.

The 300 was in production for far longer than the 200 and parts
availability is much better. From my perspective, if you want to
leave the mounts where they are then the 200 is the way to go,
if you don't care or want to use the Disco mounts you may as
well go 300. The 300 manifold by all accounts is the easiest
fit, although I have no choice but to use 200Tdi Defender on my
lightweight as it's a left hooker. The 300 manifold bolts
straight on a 200 so you can combine the two in that way.
If you read through the detail on the Glencoyne website he is
very thorough in explaining a few changes that were made for
cheapness rather than improvement of the engine so it doesn't
directly follow that as the 300 came later it is actually
superior in every way.

there is guy who has a 300tdi 110, imported as such from uk but
the engine has a rattle noise that puts me off on accelleration
:( but that is just a thought :) and a useless comment !! by a
2.25er.

And if you are chopping off engine mounts and can live with the
engine going forward 4" then you could also fit a 5 speed box to
boot - yes it's more £££, but so are the other sensible options
(high ratio transfer box or overdrive) of raising your final
drive ratio behind a Di.
3.54 diffs raise the whole final drive ratio quite a bit; yes
the boingies use them but they mostly have lower ratios in the
xfer box to compensate. Fine behind V8 or TDi, but a Di might
suffer.

does the engine have to move 4" forward with a defender 5 speed
box or just with the disco box?

There's a bit about 5 speed conversions on the Ashcroft website.

/>Someone will no doubt be along who knows a lot more about it
than me, save to say if you want a R380 (I would) you need a
shorter version that were made in small numbers. And I forgot to
mention the excellent article in the archive:

when fitting a tdi plus a 5 speed box, as i have, you have to
accomodare the xtra 4 inch either engine foward or gearbox back,
each has implications, prop length, or fan removall, i opted for
keeping my series transfer box with an lt77s and a defender
200tdi

If you put a tdi on the 6 pot mountings and change the lt77
cross member to bolt on, (on mine) the gear lever pops up in the
same place as a standard 4 speed box. New rear prop and 15 mm
spacer on the front prop

Before I went for the 200 engine option for my SWB series I
asked if there was anyone local to me and managed to arrange a
test drive of his , was that impressed I bid on an engine that
day.
So well worth asking the question the one issue I have battled
with for 12 months is the noise level now down to 93 decibels at
50mph gets no worse above that.
Fitted mine with out turbo and now have fitted Ashcroft high
ratio transfer case and I am really happy with it.
I only average 30mpg on a tank full usually 120mile run out and
then local miles for rest of tank.
I am on Tyneside.

How far out does the speedo get for those running the 200 with
discovery diffs?
