I guess its been talked about many times but here I go sorry.
*help*
Exactly how noisy / bad is a 200 di conversion?
I am seriously thinking about converting my 109 but have never
seen or heard one. Does anybody have one I could see near
Southampton to have a listen before taking the plunge?
Or should I stay petrol and save the pennies for drink(*&

its very much a case of personal taste.
some wouldn't drive anything but petrol engined others love
their tdi's
I guess it really depends why you want to convert and how
original you want to keep your landy
I also have a petrol 109, the engine is ok, but is a bit low on
compression and blows a bit of oil, so I can either rebuild my
petrol engine or for same sort of money I can fit a tdi
If I fit tdi, it will give me better mpg and a bit more oomph
(good for when I tow)

The di is a noisy rattly bastard. Mine went into my 88 to
replace a tired 2.25 diesel. It'll do 30 mpg but at the cost of
the ability to hold a conversation with your passenger. I've got
a wrights acoustic matting set in too. I would stay petrol and
invest in beer :toothless:
Now, a 200tdi in a series 3 dormobile is a different matter and
I am led to believe the turbo shuts it up a bit :smilewide:

I have a 200di in a 109 that replaced a worn petrol engine. Im
very pleased with it. It is not much different noise wise to my
88" 2.25 diesel station wagon. However, my 109 is a rag top so
noise levels will be different I suppose. Just make sure that
you use either OEM Defender engine mount rubbers (NOT SHITPART
MOUNTS...) or fit the huge discovery engine mounts.

The turbo does quieter things down. My s3 88 with acoustic
stuff under bonnet and on transmission tunnel and good rubber
floor mats could never be called noisy to the point at which
conversation is difficult.the flexibility, fuel bonus and
reliability IMO , make it all so overly worth it if you do a few
longish journeys. I have o/d and 3.54 diffs, and it's great.
Maybe no good for a lot of off road stuff but that is not my
bag. It's a horse for course job I guess! :lightblb:

Can't deny that it's much more drivable than with 2.25 diseasel.
And as Tony says oem d******r mounts are the best of the bunch
when it comes to dumbing down vibration.

My 88 pick up is 2 1/4 diesel and great for farm work. My green
Dormobile weighs 2 tonnes and needs the tdi as I do lots of
miles abroad in it, requiring higher speed cruising (65-70) and
frugality. The downside of this is fewer conversations with
passengers and not being able to hear the wireless.

Thank for all the replies. I think I will go down this route.
Just want to see and hear one for real first before I spend some
dosh.
By using defender rubbers do you just mean the rubbers alone?
And if disco mounts chassis modification.

+1 for the 200di in my sawn off 109 truck cab and with the
Ashcroft high ratio transfer gears it cruises nicely and sips
diesel. Big gap between 3rd and 4th but at least 1st is now
useable.
Careful sound proofing really helps as well and I don't have a
radio so that's not a problem either, I just sing louder.
'Fewer conversations with the passenger', that means you cant
practice your French then Alex?

I ha the DI version in my soft top 88"...had the 2.25d in it
before...not really much difference noise wise...but you need
something to get the gearing up to keep the revs down if you
dont already have an o/d...saying that I had a go at insulating
mine years ago with carpets bits under the seats and wherever
else I could fit them....must do under the bonnet someday,
I used to but I found the engine was powerfull enough to pull
3.5 diffs out of the disco I broke for the engine,
I wanted to keep the engine as simple as I could to be more in
keeping with a Series Landrover,
I managed to mod the battery/air filter carrier to be able to
keep them both under the bonnet in more or the std postion,
I suppose with you having a 109 it will weigh more so be down on
power a bit compaired with mine...but I'm well pleased...getting
35mpg back and to to work...more on a long run.
Nick.
