       S2a Box into a S3
   DIR By: Violet Vivid

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Heya all
       Well I've managed to source a S2a g/box, complete with t/box,
bellhousing, clutch slave cyl, handbrake etc, to replace the
       yet-again munched one in Aryette, my 1983 S3 88" 2.5 n/a diesel
Now I've not picked it up yet, but know its come from a 1965 S2a
       88"
Am I right in my thoughts that it'll simply bolt into the space
currently taken up with the S3 box, with only having to change
the piping route for the slave cyl (as its vertical on the S2a &
       horizontal on a S3)
Or is there some slight annoying difference I need to change?
       Thanks
       xXx

You'll have to ensure the 2a release bearing mechanism will
'talk' to the clutch, the 2a and 3 have a different clutch
'cover'.... tho you can get a ring adaptor thingy that goes over
the fingers on the series 3 clutch, I've used one before and it
worked ok. you may be better to just get a 2a type.
IMHO the 2a box is way better than the horrible notchy s3
effort, example contrast the 2a release mech that's a proper
engineering job and then look at the cheap plastic piece of shit
       that's the s3 version !

       hi
whats wrong with the series 3 thingies? is this turning into a
       series two only matter :-?
       i had once a series 2 box in a series 3 109, it had a series 3
bell housing and clutch components. it did well until it was
replaced with a series 3 suffix D gearbox.

You need the S2a clutch cover (pressure plate, same thing
different name) to match the S3 box
       A S3 clutch on a S2 box won't last long
Otherwise, just the pipe positions to swap that I can think of -
and learn to double declutch on 1st and 2nd

Alternatively hou could swap the bell housing for the S3 one.
I seem to recall you had to swap the layshaft bearing too as the
shaft is a slightly different size.
But it is not too hard a job and you can keep the S3 release
       mechanism.
I used to have an ex 6cy S11 so to swap boxes I had to change
       the bell housing each time.

Thanks guys :) It think he's breaking the S2a (if he is &
anybody wants anything I'll comment then send contact details :)
) soo might grab the clutch off him too :)
Also sourcing a dead S3 box from my local garage, soo might try
taking the bellhousing off that too :) Though am I right in my
memory that only certain suffixes of S2a boxes can be swapped to
       S3 bellhousings?
My plan is to get Aryette MOT'ed on her current g/box, then
spend a weekend swapping the boxes over, I apologise in advance
for any questions I have to ask : :girly:

Yes. G-suffix onwards, I think. Ask Jim - he knows for sure.

Hope all goes well,...Personally I'd use all 2a stuff, clutch
and all , rather than needless buggering about changing
bellhousings and such... that way you'll get the much better
engineered 2a release mechanism and the easier to bleed & sod
about with 2a slave cylinder set up etc etc ! ( you may get the
idea by now I don't much like the S3 stuff ! ) :toothless:

I agree with him, The S2 system is a far better engineered
system. The S3 system was an improvement, only to the bean
       counters

The S2a gearbox needs to be a D suffix or later. This shares a
layshaft front bearing with the S3 models. Keep the matched
gears together with the cover/input shaft. Otherwise they whine
like a woman upon discovering you in the pub. Again. With any
donor gearbox, check the parking brake assembly, before fitting
ideally, and replace the rear output shaft seal if you can.
Drain the oils and fill with new. Also, check the transfer case
baseplate is fitted correctly, with the drain bung hole at the
bottom. (Yes, it happens!!) If you think it might be a struggle
for you to try this, and nobody else can be arsed, I might be
convinced to stick my oar in, but it would be at cost of fuel,
and my only free (ish) date is Feb 9th. The scoffers amongst us
seem to prefer the S2 clutch, but forget that the S3 type is a
       lot lighter to use.
