one for the fanatics: if you need a part to be reproduced for
your restoration you have a choice:
remanufacture from steel and weld together.
or go and do as its been done in the past and cast it from
alloy.
the green bracket is the template - the shin one is the second
attempt. First one went bust as expected.

Result works out o.k. At least usable. Needs cleaning of course.

what you need:
Oven - 900 degrees Celcius at minimum. Likely to need more
Alloy raw material. If you use a Series bellhousing of
flywheelhousing you will need temps well in the 1000 region as
the ally has quite some silicium in it.
sand for the form (oil sand from ebay)
two-piece case for modelling the sand
tools to play the sand and form it around the template.
form for ingots from surplus molten ally
a LOT of patience.... :rolleye0012:

Epic !! The nearest I got was mucking about casting things
from lead as a teenager, a saucepan full of steaming lead on my
( at the time ) girlfriend's mum's cooker..( for some odd reason
the mum always thought me a bit of a lunatic??? )
I'd have to do the fab and weld option meself, but tempting to
play with a bit o' casting having seen this :toothless:

Reminds me of aluminium casting at school. I can still remember
the smell of that black sand we used to make the moulds. Didn't
it have some kind of oil in it to help it stick togther or
something?

The foundry in Halifax is Hargreaves foundry, Redwinch, Never
been but I've been told that just walking through the yard is a
sight to be seen. Nice casting going on there TrueS2.

Superb!
Mate of mine recently cast an oil filter adapter for a car he is
building up as he couldn't do with parting with about £43 for
one off the shelf... very impressive as he just did it with
improvised equipment. The crucible was the bottom of a
disposable welding gas bottle (the small ones) and he got the
wood burner nice and hot and cast it in his living room, I kid
you not! Turned it out on the old Myford in the garage (which is
in desperate need of a rebuild...) and it works a treat!

Yesterday I had a collection from a foundry to go to Gilbert,
Gilkes & Gordon, pump manufacturers, in Kendal so I asked about
this.
Apparently it's some kind of clay that makes it stick togther.
It's got a particular name but I can't remember it. They call it
greensand moulding.
The sand nowadays is held together by a resin.

Ugh. Reminded me of work! I spent my last 13 years at work as a
toolmaker working for a foundry. Most of the time on die making
for "High Pressure" dies where the die is steel and the
aluminium is forced in under pressure. They did have a "Gravity"
section hand pouring into cast iron and sand moulds. The modern
sand is bound together with a resin, we cast inlet manifolds
where the inner was cored out with sand and knocked out after
casting.
