Project Dormobile
By: Toots Date: January 27, 2014, 4:24 pm

I've recently become the new caretaker of a 1973 Dormobie. Same
vintage as me so couldn't say no.
To say it needs a little love is an under estimate. Some pics to
show what I mean:-

The good news is that it came with another station wagon with a
decent donor chassis (and hopefully some other bits that may be
needed long the way). I'm hoping the fact that it still has its
sticker on is a good omen (if you believe in such crap).

The even better news is that all the dormobile parts are
present. Wardrobe, sink unit, dormatic seats, lift up top all
functional (needs new "canvas"). They too require a large dose
of looking at but could be worse. Think the seats will be the
biggest challenge as they'll be to de rustify, paint, re spring,
upholster and cover. Definitely a long term project 8)

Hat off - you're a brave man
That will need a bit of extreme TLC :smilewide:
All the best with the project

That's erm... brave!
I suppose projects like this look worse than they are. I think
they get to the point where it doesn't get any more difficult
than a slightly less rotten example as you end up replacing most
parts anyway...

Invisible outriggers 8) It looks like the body is holding the
chassis together there! You have balls taking that on!

Looking forward to seeing this one move on...
I agree with Calum, if it is a complete rebuild, it doesn't
really matter how bad it is once you get to a certain point.
Good luck!

I agree with Calum: There surely becomes a point where you may
as well pick up a vehicle really cheaply that is rotten to the
absolute core, because in reality it requires only slightly more
work than a vehicle that is superficially much more presentable
(and perhaps more expensive). This is particularly the case if
you plan to use a new galvy chassis as a starting point.
Hats off to you though Toots - there's no denying that it's a
daunting looking proposition.
