Re: 200tdi oil cooler in S3

I find these discussions silly.
Fit a brand new TDI rad and it comes with a free oil cooler. And
the pipes fit for free! The engine needs one if you want the oil
to last. Failier to fit an oil cooler means most oils are
knackered in half the service time making new oil changes needed
every 3000 miles.
Sure you will get away with it for ages. When the big ends and
mains start to rumble and you dont take any notice and it
finally lets go you can just swap out another lump.
200TDI fitted but cant be bothered with the intercooler? Sure
go for it. It will last for ages. After all "joe smith" has done
it and it goes just fine! Well it has so far. But when you
decide to tow that artic to the top of the hill during winter
snow or you tow a trailer up the motorway for a mate and keep
your foot down up those hills it will, and believe me when I
say, WILL melt pistons, resulting in total engine destruction.
But no matter it lasted ages and you can always drop in another
lump when it happens. And if you want to do this double quick?
Mess with the boost and/or fueling to make great paperweights
out of your pistons.
Landrover count fractions of pennies when it comes to this
stuff. If they thought for a second they could get away without
fitting an intercooler or oil cooler they would have done it.
Failing to fit these items just means you are waiting for your
engine to fail!
One gives you reasonable service intervals of 6000 miles without
needing SHPD engine oils that cost a fortune and the other one
lets you use full throttle for long periods without melting your
pistons (And remember high piston temperatures are cooled with
engine oil!!!) and overheating your turbo turbine wheel AND
gives you around 10hp for free and lots of economy.

as far as i could tell from visual inspection, and blowing
through ports, oil could flow unhindered from block to oil
filter back to block, regardless of the thermostat position. i
just cant get my head round the logic that the oil cooler would
be primary path for the engines oil supply, once the stat is
open
but if you arent using a cooler, its pointless having the stat
in there anyway so might aswell remove it.
thermostat is behind the adapter for the feed pipe, not behind
any blanking plugs
i have the adapter fitted to 2.25 petrol, the oil cooler pipes
(and thus blanking plugs to block them) are 1/2 bsp, RTC6851 is
the official part but as said before its a standard sized
flanged plumbing fitting. copper washers 213961L official
part, which i think is same part as 200tdi sump plug
