200tdi oil cooler in S3
By: tonyg Date: January 26, 2014, 9:55 am

Can anyone give me the definitive answer on blanking off oil
cooler ports when putting 200tdi in a series 3. Glencoyne web
states that you must remove thermostat and spring before
blanking the ports.
Thanks

why not join the pipes in a big loop back to its self - or even
fit the oil cooler anyway ?

disco rad / oil cooler fitted but one of the cooler pipes burst.
Looping the other pipe back on itself would be an unsightly
bodge and blanking plugs are two fer a couple of quid from
Plumbers merchants :) There seems to be a differnce of opinion
as to whether the oil thermostat HAS to be removed before
fitting blanking plugs, or does it make fuck all difference.
Just wondered if anyone has done it to their landy?

Remove the stat if blocking the threaded holes. If you don't you
WILL ruin the engine when it gets hot. The stat when it opens,
it blocks the oilway diverting the oil into the now missing oil
cooler.

Where is the oil stat? at the base of one of the pipes?

Basicly inside the oil filtet head there are the outlet and
return pipes to the oil cooler, you will also see another nut on
there (ignoring the pressure senders) and this holds in the
thermostat. The thermostat is a bypass between the in and the
out for the oil cooler, it is normally open meaning though oil
can still go through the cooler most will bypass it, when the
oil gets hot it will close forcing the oil to go through the
cooler, if you've blocked the cooler it'll deadhead the oil pump
and cut off the oil feed to the engine. Can't remember which
side of the cooler the pressure switch is on, if its before the
cooler the warning lamp won't come on (though a gauge would
likely show increased pressure) so the next "warning" you'd
observe would be when the engine starts welding itself together.
If the engine is turbocharged I would advise you use an
oilcooler though. If you don't use the Tdi rad you can get a
small mocal oil cooler for not too much, you can also get heat
exchangers that plumb into the coolent, the ones used on VWs
with spin on filters will fit as the thread is the same though
the one on my VW van wasn't great and now runs in tamdem with a
mocal). Without cooling you'll get very high oil temps
(130+degC) when on boost which will eventually coke up your
turbo oil feed (may well take 10's of thousand miles to kill it
but remember that turbos on oil cooled engine usally manage over
100k miles without trouble - the difference between good and bad
conversions is usally long term reliability as making a diesel
engine produice too much power for about 5 minutes is VERY
easy).

Fitting the oil cooler and rad. It will be better than bodging
the series rad and another cooler. I think the original pipes
will fit which will be handy.

i just performed that oil cooler installation on the series 2.25
it is an aluminuim cooler. i have done some heavy driving with
the plant trailer and up hills on 1st for a good while but the
oil cooler is still ice cold. do i need to bleed the cooler? if
i remove the breather from engine i still see oil being
splattered out from the rocker gear.
what kind of temperature is needed to open the stat for oil
cooling? can i get one of a lower opening temperature like the
coolant stat?

As Glen suggests just buy a Mocal style cooler at fit it anyway.
On our 109 we have no engine/rad fan and no intercooler (turbo
is there). The oil cooler keeps the engione temps low and the
200tdi is a cool running lump anyway. We never have high coolant
temps even without the fan and the oil cooler covers your butt
