What's it worth?

I've been offered a S3 swb project. Looks pretty ropey. Foot
wells are shot as are some of the outriggers. Looks like a
replacement rear crossmember and front dumbirons. No idea if it
runs or if mechanically ok. So how much for an entry level
basket case?

Some pics would help. If it is a pile of scrap then I'd start at
scrap money. Last time I weighed stuff in it was £170 per tonne
so if you were to start at £200 you probably wouldn't lose.
Obviously, if it has a correct V5C, runs etc then the price
would increase. If the chassis is toast then that really kills
it, rarely will you get back the investment of a galvy chassis
on anything run of the mill.

It's on an 'X' registration, although I didn't take the chassis
number, it has the old style plate rather than a VIN so that
should make it pre-79 on a 901 prefix. Will try and get more
info and pics. What's the chances of a tax-free S3?

"What's the chances of a tax-free S3?"
Well - very small.
And make sure you get some decent paperwork before parting with
money...
Have Fun

It's unlikely to be pre-1st Jan 1973 (or pre-1st Jan 1974 come
1st April 2014) so unlikely to qualify for historic road tax,
unless it's an ex-MoD motor that was registered on an X plate
and built earlier.

As noel says, something is definitely out of kilter for it to be
a tax free, thus very early, S3 but running a 1982 X plate. Does
the vendor know anything of the history?

From your description, if I were buying it I'd hope to pay
£150-£250; if I was selling I'd hope to get £250-£350. Either
way, I'd be happy around the £250 mark if it had decent panels
or a nice accessory or two.

I've decided to give it a miss. There isn't a V5 and I'm not
looking for another project just now. Its gonna need lots of
work and money thrown at it and as its not tax free it doesn't
have the same attraction to me. I thought about breaking it for
spares but don't really have the time at the mo. BTW he would
take £275 for it.
