Alternators

Hi All
Do modern high output alternators with the serpentine belt have
the same pully shaft diameter as our single v belt pullies?
30amp out seams a bit low now the colder weather is here, plus
to many short trips with everything switched on :-\

some do, It's far simpler to go down the scrappy and find an
alternator that matches the mountings and belt - almost all
lucas can be rotated to the right "hand" and most are 45-65 a or
even up to 100a.
Changing the pulleys is possible, a chat to a local auto sparks
would be a good alternative - ask what they have that will just
bolt on.

The old ACR altinators (pile of wank) are easy to spot as they
have a black plastic cover on the back. They were avalable an
28A (16ACR), 34A (17ACR, often used as a service exchange
claimed as a 16) and 42A (18ACR, fitted to V8's and also
optional on others as a high output).
The A127 series was the replacment for the ACR, they look a
little shorter and fatter and have a metal rear and still have a
fanwheel at the front. Some still have the 3 blade lucas plug
on the back, others have stud posts, some even have both. Use
the studs and you've got 70A, use the blades and its only 55A
(yep, from the same altinator!), its also worth noting if your
going for the old blade conections you need to wire both of the
big blades together or output will be further reduiced, though
it'll work - thats also true on an ACR - quite a lot of people
only bother wireing up 1 blade so its an easy way to a bit more
power if your not using both +ves.
A 70A A127 should provide ample power and is fitted to many cars
from the 80's/early 90's. They tend to come with Vee pulleys
and drive okay on a decent belt, you can also rotate the caseing
if they go the wrong way.
The serpentine type don't have a fanwheel and you can't rotate
the casing, they come in at least 70A (or is it 65A) and 100A
forms [on a 300Tdi] but go too high power and you may find they
slip a Vee belt at high load - I've a 90A Bosch altinator on my
VW 1.6TD thats driven by a Vee belt (stock setup!) and if (or
when) it starts slipping it can actully overheat and snap the
belt if you're not careful - its a nightmare! Can't wait to
convert it to a 1.9TD with serpentine belt.
