Paddocks hit an all time low!

Ok we are all well aware how rubbish blue box components are.
However, although I am aware that not all paint products are
equal I would have thought cheaper paints would at least be
useable. Wrong! Paddocks have struck again!
From the off, I knew that the paint they sell wouldn't be very
good, I expected it to not 'go on' very well and I wasn't
surprised in that department. Well I managed. It's not like I
want a super concourse finish or anything. Strangely, the first
coat goes on ok, not great but ok. The problems start on the
second coat. I've tried various methods, flatting off between
coats etc. Followed several excellent guides (one of which I
found on OLLR if I remember rightly) and no matter how I do it,
the second coat always seems to slide and run regardless, even
when the surface is completely horizontal. I've tried with
rollers, with brushes, I've tried it in the warm, in the cold.
Nothing has worked and this cheap shit paint that Paddocks sell
just doesn't seem to like multi coats.
I was resigned to the knowledge that even though I wasn't too
bothered about the finish (within reason) I was going to have to
prep and spray the thing at a later date, when I can get it in a
paint booth at work or at least get it indoors somewhere.
However a new low has been reached - the paint doesn't appear to
be water proof. Or, rather, rain water is getting under the
paint somehow and is bubbling up in various places. I painted
the doors in the garage, and got a half decent finish. Left them
for at least a week to go off properly before I fitted them.
This was months ago. I've just been out to take the charger off
the battery and noticed new bubbles coming up. I popped one and
water came out.
So, if you fancy painting your motor, make sure you don't buy
any of this cheap shite that Paddocks sell.

I found it fades pretty quick but I didn't have any issues
putting it on.

Are they still selling the HMG stuff? For shitty 1K synthetic
crap I haven't found it too bad to be honest, but I'm not
convinced any of this modern stuff takes well to application by
brush or roller. It's OK with a spraygun, personally I favour
wet on wet application with 1K, get the undercoat on then when
still tacky fire the top coat on, wait for it to go tacky then
fire a final coat on rather than letting the coats fully dry.
I've heard good things about Craftmaster, but for the price of
it you may as well use 2K and have it last IMHO.

Noel I don't know the exact spec of it, there's nothing on the
tin. It's just whatever they advertise on their site. I only
bought it because I remember them selling official/original tins
of Land Rover paint and was hoping this was either the same or
similar. (I'm not an expert on painting)
Anyway, if I were spraying that is exactly what I would have
done, but the truck is on my drive and it won't fit in my
garage. I've had to do it by hand, some of it inside the garage
to refit later and of course the bigger bits on the vehicle, and
also I'm doing it a bit at a time as I've not had the
time/weather to do it all in one.
As I said, the second coat just slips as it dries. I thought it
was my rubbish technique but I have tried all the different
techniques advised in articles and such but it happens no matter
what. The icing on the cake being these water filled bubbles
popping up here and there. No idea how that's happened! It's
like rain water is somehow getting behind the paint and
collecting at one point, causing the bubble. Never seen anything
like it.
Anyway, I'll finish it off, get it on the road and then later on
when I can get it somewhere indoors I'll rub it down and start
again, but with a spraygun!

Maybe they've cheaped out more recently. I'm no expert by any
means but my ex-boss was a damn good coachpainter, he tried all
sorts of the modern 1K stuff and said nothing was as good as the
old paints, as very few people seem to brush professionally
these days the formulation seems to favour spraying. When he
found an old tin of Mason's London Transport red at the back of
the depot he almost messed his pants!

That's the stuff!
Thing is I originally got a tin of Limestone mixed up at a local
motor factor before I bought this rubbish, and that was a hell
of a lot better. I did the interior, bulkhead, front panel and
bonnet and it went on perfectly with a brush/roller before it
ran out. (I only had enough dosh for a few litres at the time)
When I went for more they'd gone bust and that's when I ordered
the stuff from Paddocks.

HMG make/mix Craftmaster's paint, tho won't sell you
Craftmaster's exact blend.

Thought they are at completely opposite ends of HMG's range
Its a coach paint, you don't do multiple coats with coach paint.
It won't work, that's not due to HMG its the same for all. It
isn't intended to be applied like cellulose, you put it on in
one hit
Different paints need different application and you need to use
the right one
I tend to do a light mist coat followed by a thicker coat 15mins
later - seems to work

That would make it even worse then, as the first coat went on
alright but you could see the primer below it. I tried thin
coats and thick coats and everything in between each time I've
tried. Also, doesn't explain why I'm getting water seeping
through. Anyway, I'll treat it like a coach paint and see how I
go on what's left to do

I have had OK results with Paddocks paint, with the exception of
the Marine Blue and the problem with that was colour not
application. I did brush and roller one coat and to be honest it
came out better than the stuff from a local paint supplier. It
is just to damn cold to attempt at this time of year. My next
attempt will be with white spirit based paint from "The Paint
Man"
