Still toying with the idea of 2 x heated screens, can you fit /
get an uprated alternator to save fitting a secondary battery?

:confused:mine work fine on bog standard alternator and a
single battery (all be it a big bugger). Not brave enough to use
heated screens without engine running to provide some
       electrikery though.

       A few years ago I fitted a 55 amp Marelli alternator from a MK2
Fiesta, which is an upgrade over the standard one and lined up
       nicely.

there's no point in fitting a bigger battery if the charging
system cannot keep up with the demands of the full complement of
lights and extras you add as eventually even a tubfull of
       batteries would drain
lets say your total drain is 50amps (just a random number) and
your charging system can only supply 45amps, the extra 5amps has
to come from somewhere, that'll be your battery so going by that
in the winter with lights, heated screens, heated seats,
starting etc' your battery will eventually fail
what you then need is an alternator that is capable of supplying
a "minimum" of 50amps but preferably 65amps (i would always
recommend surplus charging capabilities), always remember that
winter starting generally puts extra strain/drain on the battery
and the alternator will therefore need more time to replenish
the battery, cold and short journeys also show up weak
       batteries/poor charging
       i hope that helps

       interest

You don't need to do either. I have two heated screens in the 2a
and have done for nearly ten years. I've always gone with the
idea that what Ford put in the owners manuals for their cars for
the quickclear heated screen applies, they should be only used
for a short time (30 seconds I think Ford say). The little thin
wires really aren't designed for long periods of usage as they
have a tendency to burn out unlike the rear. They're great for
the initial clearing before the heater warms up but after a few
minutes the heater should provide enough heat to keep them clear
       if that makes sense.
I don't exactly remember, but most if not all aftermarket
replacement alternators put out more than the older standard one
did, the Bearmach units from Paddocks are rated at 45 amps I
       think.
