timing on 2.25 s3 petrol
DIR By: magnetman

Hi Guys, I need some advice... in the throes of tuning my 1973
s3 88"safari, 2.25 petrol, found the PO had put the points
retaing screw in with a crowbar or someting instead of using a
lock washer, and stripped the screw slot in the process....
net result I need to remove the dizzy to fix... chance here to
check timing, but not sure what setting?
Haynes manual is contradictory, but I have the original owners
booklet and a pukka Leyland workshop manual, and for an 8:1 CR
engine (how do you check which one you have?) it says TDC static
timing, 6degrees AFTER TDC dynamic!
now I may be a bit thick here but I have never in all my life
timed an engine ATDC, and it makes no sense to me!
what is the right setting?

The proper Land Rover manuals can be downloaded from
HTML http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/pdf-land-rover-manuals/
HTML http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/pdf-land-rover-manuals/
For valve timing, the manual says inlet opens 6 degrees BTDC.
Ignition timing, TDC when using 90 octane fuel for an 8:1
engine. If you find the engine number that will give you a clue,
and the head may have a boss with "8" stamped on it. In all my
years of Land Rover ownership I've only ever tuned by ear and
not had a problem. If your dizzy is knackered I'd get an
electronic one, fit it and set by ear. Unleaded is 95 octane so
the manual is a bit outdated to cover that.

G'day Magnetman,
All 8:1 2.25 engine numbers start with "9" according to the
manual I have

Thanks Guys!
I now know my engine is 8:1 CR thanks to you!
thanks for the manual link NoelC, I take your point re tuning by
ear, I used to do that on my A-series stuff years ago, just
rotate dizzy till engine running fastest and smooth, then
advance till it slows but still runs smooth, not fluffing, test
drive, if pinking retard it a bit.
one thing, I just had to replace all the hoses and sensor, (was
still on originals)and now the new sensor shows she is running
quite hot, not in the red but pretty close, this could be too
much advance IMHO, but I still cant get my head around the
manuals figures, it looks to me as if they are saying to retard
the ignition as the octane improves, whereas I would have
thought the opposite?

Quick question - what brand is the sensor? I made the mistake of
using a Shitpart one a while back and got all sorts of
silliness, a genuine sender unit cured that. They're about £8 or
so if I remember correctly.

I may be corrected but as far as i am aware the octane rating
of petrol is a measure of how willing the petrol is to
explode... the higher the octane the less likely it is to
explode at a given temp / pressure.
In short, in the suck, squeeze bang blow cycle of a petrol
engine, with higher octane petrol you can get more squeeze
without pinking ( hence the retarded ignition ) which will
result in a bigger bang

Hi NoelC, yes it was a shitpart sender :( I was quite pleased
with it at first, let the engine warm up at idle and she went to
normal, but she reads hot when you push her up to the heady
heights of 40mph.....have put in some water wetter to see if
that helps.
thanks serieswan, that is new info to me... still cant get my
head around ignition setting of 6 degrees AFTER TDC though, why
would you waste all that potential energy?

Im still a little confused (prob because I'm easily confused)
but…..why would the manual state 6DATDC when it should be
otherwise ? Ive bought a simonbbc elec kit and have not set
timing before so looking for a definitive method/setting before
i even start. I appreciate the comments on doing it by ear but i
don't think I'm fully confident/able to do that just yet
