Help me get my head around this - dodgy wiper motors

Hi all,
Ok, I have a weird problem. But apart from that I wonder if
anyone can shed any light on another matter. I have the old
seperate wiper motors fitted to my 109. They 'worked' after a
fashion when I first got the thing, but were very slow and
clearly in need of some fettling. I stripped them down, cleaned
their internals and put them all back together exactly as they
had been assembled with new grease. Having refitted them
recently I was dismayed to find they aren't really all that
improved. They're still very weak and slow. Ok, I suppose
they're past their best but the other weird thing is the arc of
movement is, at best, around 30 degrees. They were like this
before I stripped them so I know it's nothing I've done. They're
a very simple design, you can't really put the gears in any
other way but correctly so where has the missing movement gone?

The main gear with the crank arm comes in various degrees of
sweep.
Used to be £couple on ebay but recently someone has been
putting them on for £30 so they're all that price now.

Yes; they had a 24v converter on the side of them so they are
easy to spot.

Mine are the original 12v items. No idea which gear they have
fitted but I wouldn't expect them to be anything other than
original factory fit. It's not really possible to know but I got
the feeling the motors have never been opened up before.

did you put them back on the original wiring? Recently replaced
a fuse box on mine recently and was amazed how well the wipers
went now that they werent fed from a fuse box with dirty
contacts. Try connecting them direct to a battery

I've completely re wired the thing! I think they're just clapped
out. A bit like me

The big gear is stamped with the degree of sweep. Best check
that before giving up hope :-?

Thank you Clunk. That's worth knowing. Although mine doesn't
look exactly like that. No split pins for a start.

The lost motion is pretty much always in the dog clutch between
the oscillating shaft and the spindle for the wiper arm; the
joint you pull apart when you work the wiper by hand. If you
don't mind losing the "manual" feature you can pin or bond the
joint together. If not, you either need to find some less worn
bits to try some selective assembly, build up the worn bit with
weld and dress back, or remake it from scratch. Even brand new
motors can have an alarming amount of play in them.
As to slow running, that could be a dry electrical joint, worn
or dirty brushes/commutator, 24v winding fitted in error or a
mechanical issue/misassembly missed on the rebuild.
24v motors are marked as such. Most, but not all, have a small
box on the side rather than just a terminal. This is an
electrical interference suppressor though, not a voltage
dropper. The inner windings are different between 12 and 24 volt
models, with the latter having approximately 2x the number of
winds in 1/2x the capacity wire.
