running costs

hi,
now I am settling in with my new toy ( 81 2.25 petrol 88 ) I am
wondering if I don't do many miles because of cost, which is ok
ish.
or if it didn't cost so much, would I use it more? so how much
do I spend to make it cheaper, and how? 200 di/tdi , I think I
ve got
enough noise, and I guess to get the best of it the gearing
needs changing as well. or lpg. I don't mind reduced space in
the back.
anyone got any experience/ advice. thanks. mark.

if you want to keep it as original as possible go for gas
conversion makes it quite an economical motor, i had gas but
have now gone for tdi as the mpg is better but all in all i dont
think that there is much between the cost of lpg and diesel when
its worked out.

thanks for your input. as for mileage, I don't know. it may
depend on cost.
as for originality. practicality and useability are important,
but I want a series, not
a newer model.

Go gas. Mine has been gassed for the last 15 years. The tank
fits behind the bulkhead so you lose a bit of space. As far as
fuel goes, try and find a gas pump so you can fuel off a gas
bottle (it's a lot cheaper). Of course doing this would be
defrauding the tax man :rolleye0012:
From my experience the engine runs better on gas and it's a lot
quieter than the tractor engine.

Well... my 2 penneth worth.. definitely go down the LPG route!
if your wanting to use it.. then it will be quitter for sure ...
Mine came with LPG ( even thou it is/has been troublesome) once
sorted will be back OK... It almost makes me smile as much at
the filling station putting LPG in as it does driving it !!!!

Hi Mark, I was in a similar dilemma a couple of years ago when
I picked up my sawn off 109 pick up. Originality was not of
concern as some kind person lobbed 12 inches off the back end.
Anyway to cut a long story as well as the back end, ha ha, I
went for 200 tdi minus the t (love mi diesels I do) and and an
ashcroft high ratio transfer box as a result I am getting 35mpg
on average. I don't drive round like mad but then you can't
especially with the ashcroft. I needed extra mpg as it is my
daily drive plus holiday vehicle for camping and other trips
done and planned. A bit noisy of course but that's okay for me.
Sorted with some sound proofing. Can't compare to an lpg though
as I have never had one..

LPG it Sounds no different Tank sat behind seats so lose two
seat spaces Still fit bench seats in Got it boxed off and spare
wheel sat on top Get approx 100miles from 28ltrs running it to
work and back

looking at costs per mile there doesn't seem to be much
difference between the two.
am I missing something with the price of bottled gas, if my
rough calcs are right
it works out at approx. £1 a litre, and pump lpg is about 70p.
