Roof hatch

Does somebody know how the roofs got modified? The are looking
very attractive to me. It seems like the outer layer (troopical
roof) was cut and the main roof got a cover plate.

The roof will leak anyway so why not do it?

If you are going to do it, please do it to a standard roof not a
tropical one!
