Series 2 value?

Hope no one minds me asking, I have viewed an early series 2
this weekend. It is mot exempt and is on the road but has grot
round rear spring mount and has a v rotten bulkhead, so I doubt
would pass another mot. The gearbox/transfer box is covered in
oil and it jumps out of 2nd.
On the plus side it has an overdrive, the rest of the chassis
seems good and it has a winch.
Seller is wanting £1500. Fair price? The bulkhead is rotten
round the vents, footwells and posts.
I'm trying to hold off making an offer as I think the bulkhead
repair cost could well be half the purchase price?

You've got £750 in the winch and overdrive so own that basis is
say yes
You probably aren't far of on the bulkhead repair. Gearbox could
be a few hundred to source a unknown replacement, so could be
1000 to spend straight away - but unless you pay for one where
someone has done the work, your going to end up doing it or
paying for it to be done ... Which gets expensive

That's what I valued the winch and overdrive around.
Its difficult weighing up whether to buy a "cheap" series and
then sink in its original purchase price on bulkhead, gearbox
and the inevitable other stuff vs paying a lot more in one go to
get something already done.
From past experience I keep telling myself its a false economy
and just save up more to buy something already done.....but you
know how it goes :blahblah

i share same thought on being better off finding a runner / done
but take your time to think it through as usually :

In my experience, its almost always cheaper to buy one with the
work done, but I keep buying wrecks

There is always that dilemma of pay top money for something that
has clearly been fully done. Pay for something that seems like
it has had work done but could be not much better than a project
or go for a project, do it so you know it is sorted properly but
end up spending more in the long run.
Never really been in situation to buy a fully restored car
though!

I've seen a "good" 2nd hand bulkhead from a 1965 military series
2. Would there be any differences to the 1959 model I'm looking
at?
Any drawbacks to swapping a bulkhead vs welding up current one?

Not enough to worry about, a 65 should be a straight swap -
although late 65 they did change some things. You may need some
later brackets etc to fit things, but no big deals
Rivet counters will know what you've done, but it will do the
job. Most wont have a clue, the changes are generally detail

I'd agree, you shouldn't have any significant problems with a
'65 bulkhead on an earlier model. With chassis no. suffix D came
a fair few changes but that changeover happened '66-'67ish and
that would need much more work.
I'd certainly keep the original bulkhead stored somewhere
though, the likes of Ashtree work miracles and when funds permit
you could always get it repaired professionally and galved.
