P reg '88 Diesel
By: abercorn Date: January 4, 2014, 12:37 pm

Here's 'the beast' one of two leafies I own, the other is a 109
petrol.
Had a 'station wagon' conversion in 2006 and can seat up to 7
but I usually have it set up with 5 forward facing seats.
I've replaced the battery, starter motor(defender one), glow
plugs, earth cables, alternator and belt, fuel filter and top
air hose. The bulkhead needs looking at now, the chassis, we'll
leave for another year. I run an industrial blasting and
corrosion prevention business so when we get a minute, we'll off
the body and blast the chassis probably with soda and then a
plastic grit before re coating with Jotun Epoxymastisc 87
Aluminium WG which makes Hammerite look like a cream puff
(blasting with soda and plastic grit means we don't have to take
the engine/ breaks etc off)
The only other mod is the addition of a NATO hook so we can tow
the sanky in the last pic.

The Sankey is one of my better buys, we use it daily at work it
is superb as a rubble lugger/machinery lugger etc, the roof is
only a few years old. It's a lot bigger than it looks in the
photo, the bed of the trailer sits at 3.5 feet, to put it into
scale, the dog is a large black lab, not a smaller one (belongs
to me and is very stupid). The trailer is a former RAF rapier
ammo tender and is rated at 3 tonnes, (trailer weighs a tonne).
These trailers are superb bits of kit when compared to some of
our others, I especially like the hydraulic brakes, so much
better than cable ones, except you do have to remember to remove
the collar after reversing! I also like the under body jacks
which allow us to use it as a mount for our large blasting
equipment. It's currently in desert drab but the paint is
peeling and we will soda blast it and respray in khaki in the
summer.
The truck sits on parabolics - I'm not convinced by these as
with the 88 it does make a roly poly ride, the tyres are pretty
new although I have recently holed one so the 7 inch spare is on
instead.
A current slight tech issue with the 4x4 selector - you can read
about it in the tech section

A long day in the cold working on the '88
I checked the 4WD system, there was a suspicion that it had got
stuck in 4WD but fortunately this was not the case. A refill of
the diff and axle oil seems to have sorted some of the noises. I
have given them a dose of Moly as well. I applied tannic acid
in the form of Vactan to the bulkhead which will stop the rust
in its tracks and buy us a few months.
The 88" is needed for towing duties as it is the only fit for
purpose diesel tow vehicle we have at the moment and with our
gas terminal clients we cannot take petrol vehicles on site.
I changed the wheels to a set of black steelies with very new
Insa Turbos which, although noisy are excellent for towing
purposes. The spare has been remounted on the dash.
I've also remounted the NATO hook to an adjustable plate, this
means that changing tow hook from NATO to pin is now simply a
matter of pulling the pin and changing the pin ball to NATO.
I also adjusted the brakes and filled up on all fluids including
replacing the oil in the air filter bowl. tonight I am building
a new loom for the glow plugs with soldered and shrink wrapped
joints. tomorrow I will fit this and also go over every earth
and connection with it's monthly winter coat of vaseline. This,
with the new glow plugs, battery, starter, alternator and cables
as well as auxiliary earth points should ensure there are no
starting issues over the winter and will put a stop to clouds of
white smoke on start up (uncombusted diesel)
The 2.25 is using about 1 lt of oil every 100 miles at the
moment, not catastrophic and about the same as I get from other
vehicles of this age. There is no blue smoke etc from the
exhaust so I'm pretty confident about the state of the rings and
wonder if it's been rebuilt recently. Perhaps in 2006 when it
was converted to a luxurious Station wagon!
Other jobs remain - it could do with a wash, the flora and fauna
on the roof and window gutters needs scrubbed off, there were
rare mosses growing under the spare wheel! I also need to
install a cig lighter for the 12V socket and want to mount rear
and front work lamps.
Towing wise the 2.25 is fine with 3 tonnes, not the fastest in
the world and not as stable as the 109 which I frequently use to
tow 3 tonne items over longish (250 miles +) distances. It's all
about ensuring you get the right gear and drive to momentum. If
anything the petrol 109 is better at this than the 2.25 in the
88". Whilst there is an argument for dropping in a 200 tdi it
sort of defeats the point of running the series vehicles. My
reason for doing so is to demonstrate to our classic car
customers that we walk the talk by using 40 year old vehicles as
close to stock as possible in a 2014 work environment. We also
have a disco 1 300 TDi, a transit van, an Iveco HGV and a Pajero
LWB as other towing options, unfortunately, the vans are all on
other jobs and both the Disco and Pajero are out of action and
will be until paperwork is sorted out this leaves the 88" and
109" as our primary towing vehicles. Items towed include the
Sankey trailer, a 2 tonne Atlas copco 300 CFM compressor, a 2
tonne Ifor Williams trailer with a 170CFM compressor and soda
blasting machine, a Batesons Flatbed and a 3 tonne 475 CFM
compressor. Interestingly enough, both the 88" and 109" are
better at towing the 3 tonne compressor than either the disco or
the Pajero. I think this might be because you pay a lot more
attention to what you are doing whereas with the newer trucks,
both of which are automatic, there is a tendency to drive too
quickly for these weights, certainly, the Pajero is terrible and
terrifying for fish tailing and the Disco tends to be very slidy
and tail heavy. 40 mph over Shap might be slow but it's safe!

How do you stand legally towing a 3 ton trailer with a SWB
series?
Mine clearly states on the bulkhead plate Maximum trailer weight
2 ton. So I would have thought that made it illegal to tow a 3
ton trailer?

That's a lovely motor, reminds me of my old 2.25d 88" - which I
miss terribly. Superb little engines.

3 tonnes not 3 ton -
The recommended tow limit is 2 imperial tons.
When we do tow over 2200kg we use a 12v air brake coupler which
turns the landy into an articulated vehicle.
We rarely use the 88 to tow these sorts of weights on the public
road but frequently do on site. We will typically use the 109 if
we have any long distance work to do - I'm the only one with a
license to drive an articulated lorry
Your point is well made though, the law on towing, like so much
of VOSA is about as confusing as they could possibly make it. We
have had to correct VOSA officers at check points as even they
didn't understand the regulations.

You really need to check your towing regs bud. :3 .040 tonnes is
as near as damn it 3 tons. Max for series Landy is 2 tons. The
brakes you describe do not make it an artic at all . Your
trailer is "partially" imposed, a artic is " super " imposed.
Like so many things, OK 'till summat goes tits up. :-?
