signwriting on metal

Morning all,
does anyone have a good link to a site that has decent
signwriting fonts and a 'how to' guide? We are doing the livery
on some of our vehicles and I'd rather sign write the 109. I've
had a good look but if anything are more confused now than I was
when I started. :banghead

I don't know if the above site is any use to you,or whether you
meant REAL signwriting.
The site however is very comprehensive and easy to
navigate,quick and cheap.
Just a thought. :-?

I am in south staffs and most "real signwriting" is done by the
canal boat boys around here. All other work is vinyl stick on.

My mother is a dab hand at this sort of thing but if I ask her
I'll be waiting 10 years.
Canal boat - good call! We have some up here as well. I'm going
to drop the local steam railway preservation soc an email as
well, I think they have these skills at Boness on Forth, I'll
offer them some media blasting in exchange!

there used to be a few places around that do pub signs, also
mainly hand painted. Its worth looking into if there are any of
those local to you.

I used to have my motorcycle tanks lined by an old signwriter in
the next village. I would watch in total amazement as he first
applied varnish from a brush with bristles about 2" long, and
then "books" of gold leaf where applied all varnished over on
completion. Sadly a dying trade, vinyl boys can do a van for
around £150 signwriter needs a few days wages.

there is another option. If you talk to the local vinyl guys,
they should be able to cut the design you want, but with slight
changes. There used to be two options
1 get them to cut as normal, but on a low tack film, but mount
the "weed" onto a transfer vinyl. You then apply the film to you
vehicle, and use it as a paint mask. Once you've painted, peel
the film away.
2 some cutting machines can use a perforating wheel instead of a
cutting blade. This marks the outlines of the design into a
litho film or similar. You then tape the litho film into
position, and use a chalk bag to put chalk dust through the
holes. When you remove the film, you are left with chalk dots
to follow

I have had a local vinyl guy make me a stencil for a bike I am
building "Triton" is cut through and applied to a polished case.
I have then lightly sandblasted the case through the triton logo
and peeled off the vinyl to leave triton as a matt finish
against the polished alloy of the case. Very effective visually
I will be doing the same to the alloy petrol tank.

I once had signwriting on the doors of my 88. It was for the
Motor Rail & Tramcar Co. I made up the artwork in Photoshop and
printed it on to a couple of sheets of A4. I sellotaped them
together and made the sheets into a stencil by cutting the
letters out with a craft knife.
Then I sprayed the back of the stencil with spray mount glue and
stuck it on the door. I then roughly dabbed paint on and after
the stencil was removed I went over the letters with a small
modelling brush. Not true signwriting but it worked.

Thanks for the tips -
we use vinyl for blasting letters onto glass etc and some of the
rat sport guys like us to blast vinyl transfers on their bonnets
etc, let them weather and then seal with laquer
