       4x2 issues with 88 Diesel
   DIR By: abercorn
       Date: January 3, 2014, 10:35 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       evening,
One of our leafies, a '76 88" diesel lunched it's rear prop
shaft on the Edinburgh city Bypass before xmas. It transpired
that the employee in whose care the truck was for the previous
week, loaned to him whilst his car was off the road against my
better advice, had been spending most of the previous week
driving between Perth and Edinburgh twice a day on the M90 with
4WD selected. I realised something was up when I took it back
off him and within 5 miles the rear prop shaft wrenched itself
off the car and went hurtling down the road causing mayhem and
       carnage to cars behind.
Mark's Garage (excellent land rover support in East Lothian,
Wallyford to be specific) took a spare prop shaft from one of
their series 3's, gave it a squirt of grease and let me have it.
Getting back to the farm I noticed that the transmission flange
stud nuts had been destroyed and would need ground out. So
today was the first time I got a chance to refit it. I sourced
some similar studs and, using a jubilee clip was able to secure
the smaller heads, thanks to the same employee trashing the
welding helmet I couldn't do the blob o weld method. Much
swearing and wrestling and the replacement was fitted. I've
recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my thumb basal
joints - left is much worse than right so this sort of work is
tricky and painful, I'll suffer for it tomorrow - I'm only 42
       FFS!
So, all fitted successfully, started the beast up - not a
problem despite sitting for weeks since I fitted a new
alternator, defender starter motor, new earths and cables and
the biggest battery Mr Lucas sells. So wonderful is the new
starting gubbins that the glow plugs have yet to be connected.
and it still starts after 5 seconds. :giddy:
So I drove the truck the 15 miles back to home. during this
drive I noticed that the car doesn't seem to be enjoying life,
it goes ok, the engine is superb as are the brakes but the
running gear and transmission feels a bit different and I'm
noticing whines I didn't before. The yellow knob is loose so I
suspect the lower spring under the car has become detached..it's
obvious the guilty employee had brutally yanked all levers as
the overdrive selector was bent out of position. Now - I think
there are 3 potential issues here -
firstly, there is nothing wrong at all, since I last drove this
car for longer than 5 minutes I have done several thousand miles
in the BFG, a '74 109" Petrol and the issues I am feeling aren't
issues they are just the different cars, the 88" is far more
'agricultural' in every way with less sound proofing and the
choppier ride. all I am feeling is the difference between the
       two vehicles.
secondly, in re tightening the transmission brake, I have over
tightened it and it's causing the drive to feel sluggish and is
causing a whine. - not sure about this as the hand brake has
       plenty of travel.
lastly - there is additional damage to the transmission and
drive train caused by the idiocy of the (now former) employee?
any opinions? I'm pretty sure it's a combo of the replacement
prop shaft bedding in and I've been too used to driving the 109"
but I thought I'd better ask for more experienced opinions,
we've only run leafies since July.

hi sorry to hear i let no one near my series. :) keep that in
       mind :P
did you install the propshaft the right way round? are the yokes
of the propshaft aligned properly. ?
did you try adjusting the handbrake shoes? maybe you dislodged a
shoe etc and might need resetting?
re fingers, i am just 32 (and not such a big bloke - just 5'9")
and i have reached a state that when spannering in tight spots i
have to split the job to allow both thumbs have a break etc as
       they get really painful. :(
how is they front axle doing? does it spin freely ? maybe there
is something wrong with the front?

I would check the operation of the yellow knob. The 4wd selector
shaft might be stuck back and the drive dog engaging. Have a
look under the wee top hat at the front of the transfer box.

Good call - I did notice a few months ago that the 4x4 selector
shaft had become detached from the return spring at the bottom
of the rod, causing the yellow knob to be loose up and down. I
suspect the twit to whom I loaned the truck has, in his
prehistoric grunting efforts, in addition to bending the OD
selector, he dislodged the 4x4 selector by yanking it forwards
and backwards. I'll have a closer look. It never ceases to amaze
me how pisspoor the basic mechanical understanding of some of
the younger employees have, including those who have supposedly
served an apprenticeship as a mechanic with a dealership or a
college course in mechanics. There is an attitude of dispose and
replace rather than repair and restore, with some of them this
pervades into how they treat kit - 'it's old so it must be
rubbish and therefore I can treat it any way I want to'
       attitude.
This isn't a generalisation, I know several very skilled and
knowledgeable young specialists but it's becoming increasingly
difficult to find them. My wife's P38 suffered the usual air
       suspension issues recently, it's a 2002 V8 with LPG and 130k on
the clock. One of our young lads was amazed that I went to the
trouble of repairing the air suspension and learning how to use
the software that allows you to do so - his attitude was - 'why
doesn't she buy a new one, it's 12 year's old. an attitude that
worried me greatly given that a large part of our business is
involved in the restoration of classic vehicles. The P38 is a
long way from a classic, but if it can be fixed cost effectively
       then why bin it?
       grumble grumble rant rant.....grrr.....
I'll check the linkage, it will cheer me up and I might even
       reconnect the glow plugs

Hi, just for clarity I mean the selector shaft inside the
transfer box as opposed to the red lever. When you push the
yellow lever down it lifts a pin out of the shaft allowing it to
spring forward. This in turn pulls the drive dog onto the front
output shaft which connects to the front prop shaft. (At least I
think that's how it works!) when you pull the red lever back the
selector shaft should come back and let the pin drop back in its
hole helped by the spring on the yellow lever. If the spring on
the yellow lever is missing, it's probably in permanent 4x4.
When you mentioned the yellow knob was lose, I wondered if the
shaft wasn't coming back far enough to let the pin drop.
Hope that makes some sense and apologies if I'm teaching granny
       to suck eggs!

       hi sorry to hear
well you are true on most of your counts. hence my sadness at
times at what fate my two series 3s will go through if they
       turn orphans :haha:
you might as well remove the plastic cover on the end of the
front output housing (where the front prop-shaft leaves the
gearbox assembly) and check if they shafts are free to move.
tapping them or applying rust looseners etc might help.
I ended up stuck in 4x4 once when i bought the first LR , both
yellow and red knob where ok but the selector shafts were stuck
       in the housing .

Thanks - no granny egg sucking at all - all advice gladly
       accepted!
I had the truck out again today but didn't get a chance to
       check, tomorrow's job!

Moral of story, don't let knobs who can't drive use your LR even
for 5 min! One of the places I do work for have had a S3 and a
boingy 90 both trashed to the point of uneconomical repair by
letting a couple of clueless kids charge around the site in 'em
       ( again against advice ) ::)

The young twat - in the 6 months he worked for us:
       - hit a new Polo in a filling station
       - nearly killed himself in the CX Gti
       - broke a Clio, twice
       - put a huge dent in the side of a transit
       - lost the bumper ends of our Disgavory
       - got epoxy paint all over the leather seats of the Disgavory
       - lost 2 nearside wing mirrors on the disgavory
       - fucked 3 jockey wheels
       and the S3....
       unbelievable!
