Front Chassis Leg - What is involved?

Ay up,
Betsy needs a new O/S/F Chassis Leg. Found out a few weeks ago
whilst replacing the bumper. It really is about fucked.
Looks like it must be fairly common 'cos it looks like a right
moisture trap and quite exposed.
Having never done it before, What is involved in fitting the
repair section, I.E. is it a case of wing off, radiator panel
off etc or is not that bad? Never had the wings off Betsy so
might find some horror stories there.
Also any tips for how to keep the leafs down away from the leg
etc or anything else you think I might need to know?

Are we talking about the dumb iron Stuart? You can buy a
replacement or patch it up. Depends how much of it is rotten. I
got away with cutting out the rot and rebuilding without having
to take the springs off.

Aye the dumb iron. It is fucked mate, feels like sponge on the
top where the bumper bolts on so I would prefer to do a
replacement. Although no doubt given the inclination it could be
frankensteined back into life.

if you have a look on S2 club site 'Nitemare' can be seen
repairing his front dumb irons, really good job perhaps a little
more time consuming than replacement but as they say 'the job
seems to be a real goodun' kind regards :toothless:

I got mine done by nitemare, a really super job. A thread under
"welding chassis" over on Landyzone showing pictures. Nitemare
has made a jig to align the dumb iron up correctly.
Also have a look at this months Classic Land Rover mag the job
is covered in one of the features.

nice and easy,
before you start the method of keeping things aligned with a
threaded bar between the spring eyes doesnt work that well.....
( dont ask how i know )
wing off but rad panel can stay in place

i "can" repair or replace as needed but it takes time, thought
and jigging...
replace is often the easiest solution as any rot in the top
plate almost certainly means the inner and lower materials are
rotten as well (it's not just a box section with two holes
drilled through it)

Thanks for the help folks I will be looking through those
pictures just now.
Funnily enough the new CLR mag is waiting for me to pick it up
on the coffee table so that couldn't be better timing for a
feature.
Any more tips, keep em coming.
