hello
my series 3 has a starting problem sometimes you can but the key
in crank it over and starts first time but some times it just
won't start (sounds like battery is flat) but still won't go
even when I put jump leads on I have but a new solenoid starter
motor and the battery is fairly new has any one got any ideas ?
Thanks
Dan

first things first, have you checked all connections? To get it
working ok sometimes and not others could lead to there being a
lose connection. Earth straps as well.

^^^beat me to it! I was going to suggest earth straps.
DAN: do you mean that the engine turns ok but won't fire, or you
turn the key and nothing happens?

Earth straps would be my first thought. Add an extra one direct
from a starter fixing bolt to the chassis, that did the trick
for me.

Could be a tired starter. Just changed mine for it being
similar, made it 100% better.
Would turn the engine real slow and sometimes just stop. Luckily
engine is in good nick so I could still get her to fire.
If you had a friend with a known good one you could borrow to
try that would help. But you probably don't, it's a long shot.
Earth braids are cheaper than started so it makes sense to try
those first.

Try a jump lead as a 'temporary earth' but is is colder now,
this will show up weak battery's crap starters and bad
connections like nothing else.
Good luck, its always fun changing starters when you cant feel
your fingers.

If it is petrol does the choke cable get warm ? I have seen them
glow when the earth bonding straps have failed or been forgotten
when engines put back in.
