wobbly steering tips please

Hi all, hope you are all staying out the cold.
Im having problems with my steering.Its VERY wobbly. The
steering input seems to have little effect on my direction of
travel.
I have replaced all the steering ball joints, adjusted my
steering/ drag link bar lenghts etc as per manuals. I have
torqued up all my bolts to the correct levels.
I am going to adjust the steering box ,which along with the
relay has fresh oil in them, on the next dry day.
I was wondering, is there any thing else i can check whilst im
about it?
First Landy so i'm still learning so i hope you wont mind a few
more questions in the future.

Wheel alignment? Worth looking at the wear on the tyres, also
worth checking your wheel nuts... you never know :rolleye0012:

Series steering can be a bit of a thing Keith, to say the least.
A good place to start is with an assistant observe how the
linkages move when the steering is gently rocked. If there is a
lot of input at the wheel before anything moves at the wheels
you should be able to see where the dead zone is. Another common
one is the plate that holds the steering relay steady being
missing or loose. If you look at the steering relay from
underneath a circular plate held with 4 set screws should be in
place:

Without it the relay can move side to side and that multiplies
up to something quite alarming at the wheel. When you say wobbly
do you mean when you hit a bump you get a shimmy? If so that is
commonly swivel pre-load, the manual details the process on that
in detail. You could jack the wheels up and rock them top to
bottom, play in the kingpin is also quite common and usually can
be adjusted out by removing shims.

With my experience of Land Rovers, the next (or first thing to
look at if I had started the Job) would be the "Swivel" pre
load. I am referring here to the big chrome ball jobbie.
Disconnect the steering arm and check the tension required to
pull the arm. This is done with a spring balance ( got anything
in your fishing box to weigh the catch?) a pull of around 10
pounds with the seal out or 14/16 pounds with the seal in is
required. Providing the "railko" bush in the top swivel is ok
you can remove shims from the top swivel pin to achieve this.
When you do adjust the steering box do a little at a time and
turn lock to lock and stop when things start to feel tight as
you turn the wheel.
Oh and welcome to the board if you have not introduced yourself
yet do it quick before the natives find out.

Keith did introduce himself divie, all good there, the post

the one thing that's easy to overlook is the stand that the
steering box is mounted on. Its fixed to the chassis with three
bolts, and if these are loose, then the stand can move,
resulting in very numb steering. 30 seconds with a pair of 1/2
inch spanners can eliminate this one from the possibilities.

not only that, how rotten is your bulkhead/footwell as the
stand/steering box is also bolted to the footwell which also
helps support/stop the flex (as long as it's not rotten)
one thing to remember is there are different track rod
ends/track rods for the different model Series vehicles, these
have different threads and may or may not be shouldered so care
needs taking to make sure you replace with like for like, if
they look different from the originals then you most likely have
the wrong ones
i also experienced strangeness from my steering in my bitsa
which happened as i hit potholes, it turned out a trackrod end
from my steering box had come loose in the draglink, this gave
me a "tankslapper" when i hit potholes, if i hadn't hunted it
down with a mate waggling the steering there is every likelihood
it would have fretted until it broke free :eek:

Tracking out of alignment can make the steering feel wooly and
imprecise. Shot spring bushes also contribute, but tend to knock
to advise of their condition.
All the above advice is sound too.

Thanks for the replies folks!
Had a quick look today. Noel C advised me about the steering
relay plate bolts. There are 4 there alright problem is three
seemed to of been sheared off!
I will have to drill the reminants out. Something to look
forward too.
I am going to go through the rest of the system again and follow
everybody elses tips as well.

Sounds like someone tried to remove it and gave up!
Have fund drilling them out... :smilewide:
