POLL - Chrome Ball Gaiters

Ay up.
Thought this would be interesting as I started a thread in the
tech tips on fitting them and the first reply I got was don't
bother.
Was wondering if this opinion was reflected by many people.
Would be great if you could justify answers with experience etc.

My rirst 109 had leather gaiters fitted probably during it's
military service. When after about 10 years it was time to
overhaul the steering I removed the gaiters and found my balls
were pristine. Mind you no deep wading or deep muddy
hijinks had taken place or it might have been a different
story. :rolleye0012:

Just search for peoples experiences of gaiters, both rubber and
leather. You don't have to fit them just 'coz you've got some.

Vinny had some great pictures of the pile of rust and gore that
was inside his gaiters. Guess they've been lost now.
Seems no one can fit them as well as the military.

Mine actually have the rubber type on and apparently have done
for some time as they have started to crack and have holed.
This means that my balls have obviously been protected by them
as they look brand new but now they are holey they will
inevitably start to hold in crud and deteriorate. Hence the
question.

Yes - your balls are certainly better in a bag. Leather, rubber,
or (with a little ingenuity) home-made; packed out with greasy
grease, your balls will last a lifetime (unless they're those
oval ones from shitpart that come pre-rusted for your
convenience :2mo5pow:).

I bought a secondhand axle years ago, that cost the princely sum
of £1 at a local auction. It was crusty as fuck, and caked with
all sorts of oil/mud/filth. I only bought it as there was a
likelihood of salvaging some bits and I thought, for a pound, I
couldn't go wrong. I cut the manky leather gaiters off, only to
find pristine swivels underneath.
I've always used some form of gaiter, but I don't do much heavy
swamp cruising, so filling them full of muck isn't a worry for
me; stone chips from road work is.
The leather ones are a mucky and awkward job to fit, but once on
last well. The one-piece rubber ones you have to pull the entire
swivel off to fit are a ball-ache to do unless part of a
complete overhaul, and the ones I had only lasted three or four
years before they'd split. The Rubber ones you glue together can
be fitted without any major disassembly, but also don't last
very long.
Personally, I think they're worth having, and that leather ones
are worth the struggle to fit them.
Other opinions exist. They're wrong, obviously, but they're out
there.

I think they're worth having. I've had at least 3 or 4 second
hand axles with them fitted and the chrome balls have been mint.
Just avoid Britpart, the last kit of theirs I saw had no cord to
tie the leather up. Beggars belief.
