Fitting Chrome Ball Gaiters

Ay up,
I have some of those leather gaiters for my chrome balls (ooh er
missus). The ones that you fit and lace up.
I have never done it before, what is involved?
As in how much do you have to strip, can you do it with the
wheels on/off/ jacked up/on the ground and how long should I
expect it to take?
My balls are lovely and shiney, and I am sure many would be
jealous of them, so I thought it best to get this done before
the salt really goes down to protect them from the winter
weather.

Leave them off. No matter what you do crud will get inside and
eat away at your balls without you noticing. Better to let the
air circulate and dry them off naturally.

42 years later mine seem to be quite happy - and crudless -
inside their little leather boots. ( Ex MOD).

I have the same thoughts as Gene, the only time I have known a
crud accumulation was when some PO Chimp fitted them upside
down, the stitching was at the top and not the bottom!

The MOD machines nearly always seem to have shiney balls under
the leather gaitors.
fitted some recently as part of an axle refurb, fit the join at
about 5 o clock rearwars so they can drain, you will likely need
longer bolts for the seal retainers, coat the leather with
vasoline/grease or whatever first to make em waterproof and
flexible, it was a reasonably awkward job to do properly with
the axle on the bench so fitting on the vehicle could be a rite
pain. in theory to should be able to undo the seal retainer,
wrap the gaiter and lace it then bolt the retainer back on
sandwiching the gaiter between the retainer and the provided err
sandwhich ring thingy, I needed 1/4 longer bolts.
The jubilee clip on the narrow bit is a rite pig to get just
right.
Once done check they fold so that the gaiter does not get
trapped on the steering stop adjuster.

I removed the leather gaitors on my 1975 Norwegian exmod.
I feared rusted chrome balls but they where like new.
A bit of dust had collected on the bottom but thats all.
I put on liberal amounts of Fluid film in hope of keeping them
nice.
I think I will buy a new set and put on.

So by taking the retainer bolts out nothing falls off or goes
out of line etc?

No it just holds the big seal in place, chances are the seal is
rusted in position as it sort of presses in anyway, at worst you
may loose some oil but I can't see the seal moving.
Note that the front retainer bolt is also the steering lock
adjuster and will need setting afterwards.

I think I've heard many more positives than negatives about
gaiters.
It seems it's important to lace them up at the bottom though,
and some folk take the time to either unlace and clean out every
couple of years, or at least squirt Waxoyl or something into
them every so often.
We've got a new leather sofa coming next week, so the old one
will yield enough leather for half a dozen sets of green gaiters
:smilewide:
I'm going to fit them to my vehicles, with plenty of Waxoyl or
even grease lathered over the balls first.
