       Centre crossmember Cheat !
By: Peter de Dawg Date: December 2, 2013, 6:26 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Upon examination ( I put me glasses on ) the centre x member was
fucked ....CBA trying to plate it up with all those daft curvy
bits etc plus it was too far gone anyway, so hit on the idea of
cutting the bastard right out and replacing with something a bit
simpler, ie a gearbox x member from a boingy of some species (
if I'd had a bit of 4x4 box section kicking about I'd have used
       that )
A mate had just such a thing ( the boingy chassis part ) that I
could have free, so off I went.
As can be seen, x member removed showed some holes in the
chassis rails inside , these were cut out to leave decent metal
resulting in triangular apertures, a quick paper template using
dirty fingers to mark edges of holes enabled me to cut a couple
of triangles of plate which were set in flush(ish) and welded, a
PO had plated over the rear rails up to here so gave me the
chance to weld these to chassis a bit more securely too.
The boingy x member would be fitted upside down with the pointy
bits facing down , the pointy bits were cut down somewhat , so
the whole thing was the same 'depth' as the chassis rails , and
the open ends plated over ( I will subsequently weld up all the
breather / drain holes to keep water/shit out of the box
       section)
A trial fit assisted with a light application of the 'ammer and
it fits in quite nicely, all now required weld all round, job
       done :toothless:.
A selection of my unskilled pics below will illustrate the above
, no doubt the purist will whine about the missing PTO hole etc,
I'm never going to use a PTO device and no one I've known has or
       will either ::)
I suspect it's stronger than the original and compared to a
hundred odd quid for a replacement part from the 'addocks' I
rather liked the price of this version ( £0 )
And hey, it's a Genuine Land Rover part rofl
