       Replace S2 wipers with S3 - worthwhile?

Despite rebuilding my driver's side wiper unit more times than I
have kissed the missus, it's still both slow and a bit iffy
(needing a thump occasionally to make it start). I think it's
just got too many miles on the clock now. The passenger unit
burned out a couple of years ago and was replaced with a
suprisingly similar unit for a speedboat off of Amazon. Anyhow,
I was thinking of replacing the pair with a S3 setup from
Paddock, and since I've not seen S3 wipers in action (fancy new
fangled things) I wanted some feedback about whether it's worth
the hassle and the 100 quid or so cost. Are they more like a
modern car wiper performance or am I still going to be able to
time the wiper arm with a sundial?

I wouldn't favour one type over the other enough to want to swap
either way. There are (were) people refurbing the original
motors for around £75 a side last time I looked, and one of the
most common failings on the separate type is hardened grease in
the gearbox part. This bit is often overlooked as the perceived
problem is the motor itself, not always the case. The advantage
of the separates ones of course is should the motor fail you can
operate it by hand. I guess it's what you get used to, I'm
always swapping between an earlier 2a and a 3 and don't even
think about the difference. The both wipe, of a fashion. :-\

Ok, thanks, it sounds like there's not enough difference to
bother. I might try replacing the motor in the burned-out one
with a more modern motor and see if I can get it going better.
Rain X on the screen is a good safeguard against wipers failing,
       btw, also improves wiper speed.

The "Series 3" type you mention are in fact Series 2a Neg Earth
type, as fitted from around 1967 approx. Also see Mini, Maxi,
Allegro etc. BL parts bin stuff, and still fitted to current
models, but with intermittent options added.

I know im a newbie but i hope this is helpful.
I have serviced my wipers. Dead easy. Neither of mine worked but
       they are whirling away now.
Clean all the hard grease out. I found that GENTLY heating the
wiper body the grease will warm and will be easier to remove.
I cleaned an resoldered all the connections as 40 year old
solder can get a bit dodgey.
If your motor still refuses to go you can adapt bushes from an
old knackered drill. Just gently file into a concaved shape.
I used isoproponol from the chemist for cleaning the leccy
bits. You can also get it from MAPLINS etc. It will be safe on
the Bakerliteish cogs inside the wiper motor. Some other
       cleaners can be very harsh.
Using a big bag of cotton buds give everything a good gentle
       clean, GET RIGHT IN THERE!
Some say use fine emery/ sand paper on the motor contacts etc
but its too harsh and the sandy bits rolling around the wiper
body can cause alot of harm.

Did you re-lubricate the moving parts within the body Keith? if
       so, what did you use?

yes bud i did. I used thicker type teflon based grease as it is
not effected by temp.Sorry i cant rember where the hell i got
       it! Old age!
Those motors experience the full range of temp throughout the
year. Also this grease easier on the workings. Get the best
quality you can as the cheaper brands can be detrimental.

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but three years after a good
cleanout my driver's side wiper is shitty again. I used normal
grease (the white stuff), I suspect it's dried out and hardened
again. Anyone suggest something which will last a bit better?
keithf, have you remembered what that stuff you used was?

       Hi,
Your wipers are about 50 years old, s there is bound to be a bit
of wear that will affect the swept area of the screen. Wipers
are a safety item, so make sure they do their job.
I like the individual wipers, but they cost too much for
comfort, The cable drive wipers will do a better job, cost half
the price, but occupy valuable glove shelf space. Your motors
       have a value to rivet-counters.
Ebay wiper motors in the BOAT section.

After living with two single screen mounted FW2 wipers for
twenty years, I finally called time on mine a few years back. I
have modified a pair of later wheelboxes so they will fit
through the screen in place of the FW2s, so from outside there
is no visible change. I have the 2-speed 14W Lucas motor in the
dash, pretty much where they are mounted on late 2As. I've also
got a simple timer circuit from Maplins that gives me three
different speeds of intermittent wipe. I could refit the
original motors at any time, with only minimal trace of the
modification. I wish I had done it years ago.
Next time I'm outside in daylight I'll get some pictures.
