It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference on mine front of
back port the rears are always to fierce, then if you back them
of to reduce this the pedal travel seems to long.
I have toyed with fitting an adjustable proportioning valve on
the rear circuit.

Ok, update from the workshop here is... I wish I hadn't touched
anything!
Pipes were, rear port of MC (i.e. closest to the servo) to rear
brakes, Front port to front brakes
Swapped them round (after re-flaring the pipe ends) so front
brakes are from the rear port, marked "P" for primary and....
No fucking brakes!
Bled and bled again, no bubbles and no brakes??
Clamped the rear flexi, Bingo, we have a pedal, quick run down
the road, shit hot front brakes
Ok back to the workshop, and after hours of fucking about, I
can't get a pedal
If I tighten the adjusters right up on the drums, Bingo, a
pedal, but as soon as I back them off one click each, the pedal
goes to the floor
So there's obviously not enough fluid being moved by the master
cylinder?
Just been checking the number on the side, and although I was
sold it as a stage one cylinder, it's no 74660213 seems to be
that of a late series 88 or early 90?
I'm fed up at the moment, that's why I'm back in the house
writing this with "another" can of Stella Cidre
What was that saying? If it aint broke, leave the fucking thing
alone!!
Do you think it could be the seals on the secondary piston?
With the rear flexi clamped, the pedal is firm and doesn't creep
down!!
I'll report back when I can be arsed fixing the thing

This obviously indicates a problem with the rear part of the
braking system. As you have dual type system do you have the
brake failure switch installed where you have five brake pipe
connections? I know if you have, they can be a pain when
bleeding the brakes as if you push too hard on the pedal the
shuttle valve requires resetting.
Although after reading your symptoms again I reckon your along
the right track with the master cylinder secondary seal.
Purchase a rebuild kit as they are easily rebuilt. When I
rebuilt mine it had no end of dirty shite in it and the rubbers
were poor, shit hot brakes all round now  good luck and
trust me you will get there ;-)

This might be a thick question, but I'll ask anyway, is the
master cylinder for a diagonal split system? If so surely the
two pistons will be of the same size and displace the same
amount of fluid so it shouldn't make a difference which port you
plumbed into.
Which way is the split run on late 88 early 90's, just a
thought.

Split is front and rear - not diagonal.
Big question is are the pistons the same size? - not sure they
are...and anyway why did LR decide seemingly that the LWB and
SWB are plumbed opposite ways around into the MC?
