Brake Plumbing Question?
DIR By: BenzR over
Date: November 27, 2013, 10:15 am
---------------------------------------------------------
I'm happy to admit my brakes are shite, but then, they've always
been shite
I've stage one drums on the front 11" X 3"
11" drums on the back with small dia. wheel cylinders from the
original 10" brakes
I've a Gay defender pedal box and servo and late series LWB
master cylinder (1" bore I think)
Brakes are fine at low speeds, but heavy braking from speed is
worrying, emergency stops are non existent, and in the wet, the
back wheels lock...
I've never managed to lock the front wheels, but like her
indoors, I've grown to live with them
Anyway, the brakes started pulling badly to the left last week,
and on investigation I found the R/H lower cylinder had sheared
through and was only holding by one bolt ?? (usual aftermarket
quality parts)
After running the drums in the lathe, new Bearmach shoes, new
cylinder fitted, bled and all brakes adjusted I headed off on
the test thrash only to be disappointed again, they're no better
than they were two weeks ago
Ok, my question is:-
I've been reading round, and found a couple of threads that
claim the brakes on a stage one (which is basically what I've
got) are piped with the back brakes from the front port of the
master cylinder, and the front brakes from the back port?
Is this right?
I always thought brakes were piped back to the back port
(primary circuit) and fronts to the front (secondary circuit)
Ken.

Ok, I'm wrong, my plumbing's wrong :haha:
But more importantly, so is the Haynes book of lies (book no.
314) :wanker:
plumbing diagram on page 112 clearly shows the complete braking
system as a line diagram with the front port of the master
cylinder going to the front brakes
But having spent the last hour geeking through kit car building
sites, they all state the front brakes go to the rear port
Ok, will report back to tomorrow, off to the garage now, brake
flaring tool in hand for a bit of pipe swapping and bleeding
Wish me luck for the fronts! :smiley-furious:
Ken.

Come to think of it...
So much for the quality of the Mot, as it's passed two like
this? :-?

Come to think of it even more...
How sad, I post a question, then answer it myself :loser:
I wonder how long I could keep this thread going talking to
myself?

haha no problem benz.
i got :loser: by a ten year old kid in class this morning :D
RE brakes to keep on topic. mine is single line, no servo and
stock lwb things in the lwb i have. never let me down but the
Lethal aspect of such set-up is thrilling :) but keeps me aware
all the time of these things.
re shearing bolts i had one shearing off some time ago. before
our MoT (VRT here) i usually remove drums blow and wipe dust or
oils and readjust the shoes to the drums. always been spot on.
though u suspect tomorrow i have problems. i also like to spend
the initial 2 or 3 minutes of 'take off' with pedal lightly
pressed to warm up the things at the wheels. helps to avoid
sharp squeals and imbalance in stopping. The biggest pain i am
having is rear cylinders are rusting solid so at times i have to
tap them gentle free. Annoying as i dont do much wading. and we
are not having flooding downpours here yet.. :(

I done exactly the same when rebuilding mine with new brake
pipes, didn't find out until I drove it and realized the brakes
were crap. Had to re-cut the end of the brake pipe as the
fittings are different sizes (so you cant screw them in the
wrong way round!). Brakes are good now, well for drum brakes.

my 88" dual line braking is set up with the rear port feeding
the front brakes
i took the mastercylinder/servo/pedal box off an 88" that had
10" drums all round so i fitted rear 11" backplates to my front
axle to retain the SLS and standard 10" drum slaves all round
the brakes on that are light and really powerful, tyre adhesion
is now my limiting factor (unless i get water/oil/brake fluid in
the drums)

Mine is set up with the rear port to the front brakes the rears
lock up to easily, they did this when I had it plumbed the other
way though ::)

...interesting thread as there seems to be lots of confusion
about the way the pipes fit to the MC. Generally accepted that
the SWB and LWB are the opposite way around and use differnt
part numbers for the MC (why??? - perhaps to do with the
different size rear cylinders but why pipe th eopposite way
around???) so.....
Thanks for posting that up.....however, which is the 'front'
compartment - the one nearest the bulkhead or the one nearest
the 'front' of the vehicle? Do they define it anywhere?
Still all very confusing especially when you look at the parts
book which shows what I would call the rear connector (i.e. the
one closest to the bulkhead fees the rear drums and the
connector nearest the front of the vehicle feeds the front
discs. MMmmmm!
Yes, the two connectors use different size fittings so you can't
get them the wrong way around on an original installation but
when starting from scratch.....which is which. Arrrgh!!!
