So i'd gone home to pick up some tools for a job saying i'd be
back in 10 minutes, that was two weeks ago. Now, i knew the
front propshaft was rumbling a bit but it was one of them that i
was gonna get round to and anyway sometimes it seemed to stop.
But on the way back it gave no warning it just went ballistic
and gave an almighty bang, not sure what was going on i thought
i might limp home but no about 10 yards up the road in reverse
seemed okay i got sprayed with shrapnel from the front area
through all the gearstick holes i haven't got round to plugging
yet and the noise was a knocking sort of grating end is nigh
sound. So i took a technical glance and saw me gearbox oil
filtering into the verge, After a sad tow home with a tractor,
the truck didn't want to move the clutch was non existent as i
looked back i could just see first born young sam at the wheel
winching every time she staggered and peppered him with alloy
pellets, it was so sad after such happy times together...so
after rolling round in the shite for ten minutes it all became
clear , the front prop had left its housing and after gathering
up the wire loom on its travels had mashed everything in sight
and for finale had snapped the front of the transfer box right
off... i'm going to photograph it for you when i get round to
it..if you don't believe me. Then i swore a lot, but not loudly
more like a pitiful wimper ..
Very very luckily and this bit of the whole episode restored my
faith in fellow man, the bloke behind where I'm working has a
afield that's got to be landy heaven he pulled an old gearbox
out of the ground , literally and although the main box had a
rather large hole in it the transfer box looked okay (ish) under
the mud and then he handed me an old prop from the back of the
shed and saved the day, sent me on me way home and wouldn't
take anything in return .. well okay a couple of tins of
Guiness. What a great fella , i was almost happy it all went
wrong because it was all going well again. So i removed the
front of the transfer box by slacking off the gearbox mounts and
jacking the gbox up half an inch then spent ages pratting about
trying to bend the clutch stuff into shape and generally trying
to make it up to the old beast with grease for my prior
neglect.. Then tonight i fitted the prop , topped up the oil and
cranked her up again and moved slowly forwards and back about 2
feet at a time crapping myself . Tomorrow i'm going for it on a
road test , wish me luck.. Had to share it with you, the
girlfriend has taken to just staring at me and not speaking, she
knows i'm not thinking about another woman, its all about the
       UJ's . Ta for listening

I am sure we will all take a valuable lesson from that. Not sure
if it is about not procrastinating, helping your fellow man, or
something to do with the nature of women.
Think I'l go for the second one...
       S :-?

m25. Had a police rolling road block to look for the propshaft.

I have been wary of prop shafts, ever since one on a Lotus 7
came through the trans tunnel and broke my arm. The coupling
       bolts had sheared under acceleration.
